Single to Dual-Range switch

I'm contemplating a change-over from the original "single range" Hydra-Matic to a Dual Range in our '51 Hornet. I really miss the ability to have the control that it provides. My question is, how interchangeable is the selector lever and related components? Since the detent mechanism is in the transmission, is it simply a matter of changing out the plastic indicator on the steering column? Certainly, it can't be that easy!
