My guess is a 262 with od would be better suited to 4:10 range gears for mountains.
Lance would know as he lives near that type terrain.

I had a 4.10 with overdrive in my 49 Commodore. It strained on the long stretches of mountains in Pennsylvania. Speed dropped at least 10mph , but if you kicked it out of OD , the engine screamed at 70mph.

On all the other roads I used it on , it was ideal ratio.

If you used a 3.54 , you would need to travel flat roads , or kick out of OD
to handle hills. A 308 might handle it better, but Hudson used a 3.07 ratio in the automatic cars for a reason.

Syd, you have several things to consider if swapping the rear ends form a Step Down to a '47, such as narrower overall width, different angle of drive shaft, spring perches etc.  In my experience, the 4.11 with o.d is pretty well perfect, and anything  taller than this you will find too much for the 212 engine to handle.  I have 4.1 and o/d in my Jet, and with 640.15"  tyres, it is ideal for both hill climbing in direct drive and  cruising in o/d.   Your truck is probably heavier overall, and  a few horsepower less, so do think carefully about what you are doing.  could be a lot of work for minimal benefit.   My two-bob's worth.  Good luck,
