35 H8 exhaust manifold
What was mounted on the vertical flat surface with 2 holes? I'm thinking it was a heat pick-up for the auto choke?

You are right Bob, Just a small sheet metal box with a hole for the pipe from the auto-choke to fit in. About as thick as a matchbox.
