Not aware of any "pipe" Ray, but there is a vent on the shaft housing. It's a small screw on type vent.0

Ray, I think I made a mistake. The rear ends I was thinking of were the Hudson built rear ends not the Dana/Spicer rear ends. I went and checked on my Dana 44 rear ends and lo and behold -no vents!. The Hudson built ones are the ones I must have had in mind. My mistake.0

The vent is just a small hole in axle housing on driver side. It appears to be 1/16" on back side of axle housing.
It could be stopped up but think it is more likely the pinion seal is cracked.
I just replaced all bearings and seals in my 1954 Hornet. It finally needed service at approximately 400,000 miles.
