1947 pu Upper steering column question

it seems as though I am missing a spacer or something at the top of the column. The tapered bearing is in there as is the tin race which rides in the bearing but it seems that a spacer of about 1/2" needs to be in there to allow the steering wheel to not rub on the top edge of the column. Can someone describe or post a picture or direct me to a source to see what I think should be there? Or am I mistaken? Thank you for the help

The tube should be of a length that when secured at the Steering box the steering wheel back to tube clearance assures no interference between those parts.0

Thank you that answers my question as I am not using the original steering box but a jaguar ifs but wanted to retain original column and steering wheel. Now I will use an aftermarket column from speedway.0
