Engine Noise

Can anyone help? This is the noise my '54 Hornet makes when car is idling in gear. Anyone have any idea what is causing this and how to get rid of it?

You have stumped me on this one! I tried a test, uploading a "wmv" video and got the message that it was incompatible with the Forum system. My only suggestion is: if you can convert your video to a different format, you could try uploading that, and see what happens.

John, you can upload your video to any online storage and share the link out. That way you do not have to upload the file to the forum.

I use google drive because its free and I already have a gmail address so its available to use for nothing.

I uploaded the file to my google drive then right clicked it to share it out. Copied the link and pasted below.

How did I watch the video yesterday if it was never there??
The camera was pointed down toward the starter area the entire time with the engine running.
But video is not there now.
Strange~~~

I don't know how all of that works, but after clicking on the link and getting nowhere, an email shows up from Laurie with the sound/video file attached. Cool, but like techno voodoo.

Anyway, John, I hate to say it, but sounds like a rod knocking to me.

If you can't tell exactly where it's coming from, get a stick, like a 1x1 and put it on the side of the block up high, in the front, middle and rear. When doing this, put the other end of the stick right in front of your ear. Then try the same trick with the stick down low on the block. If the sound is much louder down there, it's surely not the news you were looking for.

John, in the old days we would ground one spark plug at a time and if the noise is a rod knock it will change the sound of the knock when the plug doesn't fire and you have hit the right cylinder. Listen carefully for the sound to change. Richie.

Harbor Freight sells an engine noise stethoscope for around $5.00. (looks a bit like a doctor's except for the probe like end). I have two (one in the car, the other in the garage) and they come in handy for locating the source of unusual engine noises. By the way, does the engine knock disappear when you accelerate the engine a bit? If so, that could indicate a wrist pin.

Does it make the noise when it is not in gear? if not the problem is in the transmission.

I had an old time mechanic, although not a Hudson specialist, tell me recently after talking to him about your knock, that sometimes you can get a knock if your timing is off, w/o necessarily having a bad bearing or wrist pin. So, just to cover the basics first, w/o getting into it deeply, have someone adjust the timing and see if the sound stays the same or goes away.
