Cowl to hood lacing installation

Ordered the above mentioned item from Wildrick Restorations.  When I ordered the same item from K-Gap years ago, it came with small metal bands that were designed to be pop riveted onto the body.  This kit has the small nails that are just like the original nails holding the lace to the body now.  My question to those who have replaced the hood cowl lace in a 48 to 54 Hudson if there is a trick to putting these nails through the lace and onto the body.  It was a real pain getting the old nails out...
