Shifting problem

Am having trouble putting the shift lever into first gear. Works about 10% of the time. The car is a 1950 Pacemaker with overdrive. Help would be greatly appreciated so I can safely get the car on the road again. All suggestions will be checked out.

make sure cable adjustment on tube at steering box is adjusted so that it is fully pulling into 1st phase.  If it's been sitting a lot of years, lube all shift cable and linkages up well with a good penetrating lubricant.
