Hi All, I am changing my '49 over to 12 volt and was wondering if any of you might have a part number for an altenator. Thanks Guys, Lisa G

  • Very simple, Use a standard GM alt. that takes 2 wires, Use original Hudson gen. pulley.#1 Wire (Batt) goes to starter selenoid post other #2 goes to the gen. light on your dash. This way when you turn on the ignition it excites the alt to start charging and when it starts charging your gen light goes out like it did originally. Takes a simple U shaped bracket bolted to your block to mount , nothing fancy needed. also you can use the stock GM connector on the alt.which will show you which wire is which.

Lisa, Park Waldrop sent me a complete instruction skew on changing over to 12 volt I am sure he would email you same. A GM one wire alt kicks out about 60 amps and is very avaliable & cheap. Local fellow sells to me for about $80 bucks with a 6 volt reg 12 volt is cheaper still. They should be avaliable at most any alt shop nearby ? Square length of steel tubing and a Pep Boys bracket works well.

For a book on changing to 12 volts and 6 and 12 volt alternators try Fifth Avenue Antique Auto parts.

For a more orginal look, this guy puts an alternator inside an Delco-Remy generator.

  • One question. How do you know if Alt. is charging with a 1 wire? other than an amp meter? Also that fellow charges $795.00 to rework a generator.
  • I was just wondering about the one wire. I have had the 2 wire on my Terp. 8 for 4 years now and it works beautiful and starts charging immediatly like it's supposed to. Just ran a wire to the GEN light then to #2 conn on ALT. When ignition is turned on the light comes on and when ALT reaches 12V it electrically cancels out the 12V sig. from ignition and light goes out. Very simple
