CROSS ADVERTISING

I recently bought some Hudson related memorabilia from someone who was shifting. I don't have room for any more cars, so like a lot of club members I'm now into collecting memorabilia. One of the items I was lucky to buy was an old Kelvinator round top fridge. Its a great conversation starter.

On January 4th 1937 Kelvinator (founded in Detroit in 1914) merged with Nash Motors to form Kelvinator-Nash. Kelvinator-Nash then became part of American Motors Corporation when Nash merged with Hudson in 1954. Cars then had the nickname of Hash.

At this time someone came up with the idea of cross advertising. Many people loved their Hash's, and many people had Kelvinator fridges. So the fridges were then rebadged as Kelvinator-Hudson & Kelvinator-Nash to try and increase sales I guess. Im now looking for any advertising brochures of these fridges. Also the fridge I bought from Steve has a few missing letters, and I damaged the handle in transit (sorry Steve). People have recently commented to me how the twin fins on the 57 Hornet front guards look like my fridge door handle.

Ive had trouble finding advertising literature and spare parts here in Australia. Im hoping all Hudsonites will make a special effort to ask around and help me find the missing parts I need. The chrome letters on the fridge I'm missing are U, B, N, H, A and D. I would appreciate any assistance in determining the age of the fridge. I'm hoping to have it restored and full of coldies by April 1st. Thanking everyone in anticipation of a few responses.

Just to let you know that April 1st is my birthday and if you were just a little closer I would partake in some of them coldies with you and you just gave me a good education on cars and ice boxes...:)Thanks Ron
  • Actually one of the reasons that Nash bought Kelvinator was that Charlie Nash wanted George Mason to come to work for him and Mason wouldn't do it. He felt that being president of Kelvinator was good enough and he didn't want any more. The story goes that Nash then went and bought Kelvinator and thus got Mason. Nash then appointed him to the chairmanship of N-K corp. Mason later was very instrumental in the merging of Hudson into Nash, thus forming AMC.
