A "race car driver" he sez!!!! Sort of like saying Richard was just a race car driver. LOL
"Fireball" was one of the legends - his career didn't last that long, but he tore things up while he was out there.
I didn't realize he drove Hudsons - but in checking it out I see it was only for a short time in 1950.
Another great who's time was far to short.
Hudsonly,
Alex Burr0 -
The eBay listing says his dad died 10 years ago. If his dad was Fireball Roberts, not hardly...0
-
Seems odd doesnt it.But whatever, someone should want the item.0
-
Ebay ad says he accepts PayPal only. Most of the scamers want paid this way also. Makes one wonder if he dosen't know how long his famous dad has been dead!!!0
-
This is kind of strange as any Hudnut would buy them just because they are Hudson stuff. Adding someones name makes no diff to me. Some guy is also selling 308 piston rings from Smokey Yunicks estate. I would only buy them if I need them not because Smokey had them. Smokey was awesome but who buys parts because they were owned by someone. Making up stuff on a site filled with Hudnuts who know the history and check facts is kind of nervy.0

I'm not sure about this guy selling the memorabilia, but when I sell on eBay, I only accept PayPal or green cash. There are so many counterfeit cashier's checks, money orders, and stolen credit cards out there, Paypal at least offers me, as a seller, some protection.
On the other side, I recently bought two Hudson Neon signs on eBay (nice repros, but not originals) and the seller only accepted checks and money orders. I usually only buy from Paypal users, but the price was right. When they did not ship on the specified date, I was sure that I was out the $300 I sent. They did eventually show up, but I was on pins and needles for 6 weeks. If she hadn't shipped them, I would have had zero recourse except to give the seller a bad feedback.0 -
Why does this ebay posting now not even mention"Fireball" Roberts? Has someone gone and changed the language in the current listing? Hmmmm.........BTW "CJ" ,Fireball raced Fords NOT Hudsons. Get your story right.0

Actually, as I posted earlier, Fireball raced Hudsons - at least once in 1950 for Jim Davis and again in 1952 for Bill Snowden. Also during those years he raced Oldsmobiles, an occasional Ford and once a Plymouth.

Also, as I was wandering around the house on my way to get some breakfast it occured to me that should you wish to buy this article, I think you can place the payment in escrow until you got it - then release the funds.

Rick Clark: C. J. Roberts never claims his father is “Fireball†in his description. I researched records and there was a Charlie and a Cliff Roberts that raced in NASCAR, but not with Hudsons. “Fireball†did have a local Daytona mentor in Marshall Teague who was an avid Hudson racer in the early 50’s.
The only error I see in C.J.’s description is Hudson racing in the 60’s. By that time, the heavy bodied Hudsons were not very good race cars. The reason they found early success is their revolutionary ‘step-down’ body design that made it low to the ground, thus less top-roll for corner handling.
More on Hudson can be found at another of my websites at: http://www.legendsofnascar.com/Hudson.htm
I have seen the products that C.J. is offering, but never together. They are usually separate. If you are a Hudson collector, I believe these are “must have†articles, though I do not know what 9mm film is. There’s lots of 8mm film. You would have to get it transferred to another medium if it is still usable. Film deteriorates with age.
Advice: If the price goes above $200, I would suggest emailing the seller and requesting to use EBay’s escrow account. It’s cheap enough for the assurance it gives you that you are getting the right thing. I have used the process for memorabilia and it works.
As for “Fireball’s†family, he had a wife Doris (deceased) and only one daughter, Pam (living in Fla.). No one knows a direct descendant with the name C.J.. Email him and ask questions. I would be interested in who his Dad is.
Hope this helps. I will also post on the Classic Car Forum Thread.

I forgot to mention, Fireball raced a Hudson on the beach once in 1950 for Jim Davis. I will research and see what crew members may have been named Roberts.

Hey Roland,
thanks for the info I guess we all got confused by this statement made in the first post of this thread where he states:
"My dad, a race car driver named "Fireball" Roberts, used to race Hudson's and I'm selling part of his collection on eBay."
This is what we reacted to. Seems to me he says his Dad is Fireball Roberts. He also posted the link to the ebay item which states his Father died 10 years ago. So when we put the two together it didn't add up to four.
I also do not think there is anything wrong with the items on ebay they look like the real thing I have all of them as well. What we are shaking our heads at is the seeming attempt to BS us. I do not know if there was a hope that we would get into a bidding war to get a Fireball owned memorablia item.0 -
I never saw that statement, only the current one in the Ebay ad. If that is what he originally wrote it is not possible. Thanks for the heads ups.
Here is what is in the Ebay ad:
"Unbelieveable one-of-a-kind item for Hudson Motor Car Company fans!!! My dad used to race Hudson's back in the 50's and 60's. Hudson's were always his favorite car. Years later...he bought a garage that years before had been a Hudson dealership in Upstate New York. While working in the attic one day, he found this box with a projector next to it. In this box was a sales training kit for selling 1953 Hudson cars! It includes (21) 9mm video films and audio records 33 1/3 RPM speed. What a find!!! My dad died 10 years ago. I've held on to this set since then, but I'm moving and it is time to part with this collector's item. I've researched hours on the internet for something like this, and I cannot find anything, so believe me, this is an extremely rare and genuine item. Included is the films, records, cases, projector, and some Hudson emblems my dad had (bonus). I do not have a record player, but 33 1/3 RPM is a common speed for normal record players. Please email me or call me at (410) 734-5977 with any questions. Happy Bidding! - C.J. Roberts"
Of course, Glenn Roberts never had a Hudson dealership in NY. This posting sounds legitimate, but as I suggested, use Ebay Escrow if you win!

I Guess C. J. is not saying that "Fireball Roberts" is his dad???0 -
Also, you are right, no need to be bidding against fireball collector's. He has nothing to do with this listing.
R. Via0 -
This statement is completely erroneous, unless because of the last name, someone also called his Dad "Fireball". As far as I am concerned though, that would be sacreligous. Fireball had NO son, period.

Via, great site on "Fireball Roberts", really sad, brings a tear to your eye.0

OK, with all the information flying around, I went directly to the source and called C.J.'s wife Melinda in Maryland (a very nice young lady). She said C.J.'s Dad's name was JOHN DAVIS Roberts and raced Hudson stock cars in upstate New York in the 50's and 60's. With his popularity with the fans, they nicknamed him "Fireball" too. To our knowledge, he never raced in a NASCAR sanctioned race.
Melinda explained the Hudson items are left over from his Father's estate and they want to get it out of the way. They had an antique dealer look it over but did not offer much, so they called someone with Hudson, but they already had the items, thus, the Ebay offering. Melinda said that they would modify the Ebay listing in whatever way to clarify, because her husband would not like the confusion.
Hope this helps everybody. I have the most extensive and comprehensive statistics on everything that Fireball raced at http://www.fireballroberts.com . Check it out.

Nevada Hudson: Thank you. R. Via
Also, check out the Hudson page and help me with it!

He actually disliked the nickname and his friends knew to call him by his middle name, Glenn. Other drivers, because of his hard driving style, called him "Balls."
Now that's a nickname!!!0 -
Via, has a great Hudson page , one of the best ever!0

This is C.J. Roberts everybody...
First of all, I apologize for all of the confusion for this posting. I regret mentioning my dad is "Fireball" Roberts, which is true, but my dad is not the "Fireball" Roberts who raced in NASCAR. I didn't mean to start all of this controversy. Everything I stated in Ebay is true, but I understand how you would feel I misled you. Again, I'm sorry, I should have provided more detail orginally.
Also, I must admit I'm surprised from your reactions. My first thoughts were to defend myself for posts like about getting my facts straight and maybe my name is Cindy Jane...Ha-Ha! My mom named me Christopher John, and my dad called me C.J., and it stuck ever since. In hindsight, to me this whole thing is a bit humerous, and I learned a lot about the famous "Fireball" Roberts, Hudsons and people like you who enjoy Hudson cars...so thank you!
The films and records are real. The desciption is real. I'm real, and my dad raced Modified & Late Model Dirt Track Cars for about 20 years in Upstate N.Y.. I'd attach a brief article about him and Hudsons if your system could handle a 1 mb file...it cannot! If you care enogh to see the article, I can send it to you if you email me at cjlinrob@comcast.net. In the article, they mention (4) Hudsons and a Essex he raced and won with.
Thanks & sorry - Christopher John "C.J." Roberts0 -
They nicknamed him "Balls", that's correct, however, hardly anyone ever dared call him that to his face except for Joe Weatherly and Curtis Turner, two of the biggest pranksters in NASCAR.
R. Via
I also have http://www.JoeWeatherly.com . Take a peek.0 -
According to a book I have on the history of the Y-Block Ford, apparently Curtis Turner raced them. I am going to guess he went to those after Hudson since the Y-Block didn't come out until 54 when the Hudson was going out
Like I said just a guess it was over 10 years before me.

OK, everyone. C.J. Roberts contacted me with the story of his Dad ("Fireball") and it is legit. I have added a page to www.FireballRoberts.com about the story: the OTHER "Fireball". You'll find it here:
http://www.fireballroberts.com/another_fireball.htm
It tells the story of Johnny "Fireball" Roberts.
Thanks to C.J. for sending it along.
