Production numbers
Where would one look to find production numbers for a specific model and what the codes mean. I am very curious as to how many cars of my model were made, and now that I have the service manuals, they refer to 4b,5b,6b,7b and 8b which means nothing to me. No where in the book does it tell you. Anyone

Rob--
I'm not the expert, but i've been searching like you have- Bill Cox in Tennessee is a 1954 Hudson guru, you'll find what you need here (models).

Bcars are 1952, 4B-Pacemaker, 5B-Wasp, 6B-COMMODORE 6, 7b-hornet and 8B-commodore 8. Give me your email address and I will send you model identification chart for 1948-1954.

I looked at Bill's site and it gave total numbers but not broken out to the individual models. I e-mailed a couple of days ago and haven't heard anything yet.0

I don't think the information exist that you are looking for. If the records were kept, they have been destroyed many years ago after the Nash-Kelvinator merger. All that is known is the total number of models built, but not by body style. The vin numbers are no help in that catagory either. Hornets had a series of numbers and Hornet Specials had a series etc. The engine number is (or should be) the same as the number on the door post.

SuperDave is right I have yet to see a breakout for the model sales for 54. I always see the total sold but this info seems to be lost at present. I have a lot of factory papers and I even have the Hudson, Nash merger docs so if I find anything I will post it. A lot of stuff was done to get the inventory out the door so 54 is unique in that you can see models with equipment you would not consider for that model but the dealers and factory were putting anything you wanted in your car to get it sold.0

I first encountered this problem when trying to find out how many 49 Commodore eight convertible Broughams were built. It seems like the number "7" keeps comming up. Not likely! I just talked to a man that had a 51 Hornet Conv. and he said "there were only seven made". I don't know where that myth started but there are no numbers to refer to to refute it. I personally know of four 51 Hornet convertibles. The likelyhood of nearly half of the production surviving and most of them in the South East is pretty slim. I seem to remember that someone started a data base by body style and vin number. This was in the seventies? The object was to try and determine if they came down the line in groups. I don't know the outcome, but I have seem pictures of the assembly line and the models were mixed. A Coupe followed by a convertible and then a four door, etc. so I doubt if that study proved anything. if someone has a better memory than me (easily done!) please update me on the outcome of the study.

That's a real bummer. I figured it wouldn't get as detailed as too how many were built with sticks or auto's since most I have come across are auto's for 54. I would have thought there would be info that would show Hornet Special 2dr sedan. That would be pretty basic info one would think. Well I know it is pretty rare, just being a Hudson makes it rare considering the responses I am getting out there already. Just wish I had an answer when I get asked "So how many of those were built"?0

http://groups.msn.com/HudsonMotorCarCompany/ - look under "Hudson Shipments & Registrations - 1948-1954 Production". Then scroll down to the 1948-1954 production chart.
While not totally complete it's about the best we can do at the moment.
