I remember in the late 60's my Dad complaining that gas was costing over 25 cents a gallon! I think it hit $1.00 while I was in high school. Oh...for those days again!

I remember, one time, back in the late 50's, gas stations selling at 8, 9 and 10 cents a gallon. They were having a gas war on the Berlin Turnpike south of Hartford, CT.
For those of you to young to remember "gas war" back then meant gas prices went down, not up as it seems today.

The prices are due to some young men and women on the stockmarket exchange floor and someone sneezes and they all panic at the same time. They live in New York City and do not drive to work nor do they own a car. Most of their traveling is done via the subway or bus or taxi, or what ever. Thanks to their panic mode we get the end result and that means higher prices. They don't care as it does not effect them directly. My unending question for them is that we here in California do not import oil for our fuel needs. Why is it that we are tied to their fuel price increases. Most of Alaska's oil goes to the far east, so why don't get a kickback from them on price? A lot of questions but few who will stand up and say anything. Most states and the federal government have benifited from the rising prices in the form of taxes. This windfall has gotten Calif. out of debt and our Governor is spending like water out of a pitcher. Best way to lower the price is to stop driving and flying and watch the prices go down. That is what happen after 9-11. Keep thinking the good thoughts.. Richs.0

Alex,
I remember in 1968, in Dayton, Ohio. A gas war was going on at one particular intersection. One brand on each of the 4 corners. The price went from $.25 down to $.13 from the time I went by on the way to school until I stopped and filled up on the way home. Did not last long though. Went back up the next day...
Like JETMAN said, I would gladly pay $1.25 now!!!!!

This summer after Katrina, I filled the tank of my 49. The gas was $3.31.9 a gallon. When the car was new you probably could fill an empty tank for $3.30l. The gas in CT dropped to $2.29.9 and now has shot up again to $2.5990

If they can't be held accountable for their actions (the oil co's) they can't be punished for their actions. If they won't be put under oath by the lawmakers then you can't hold them accountable for their actions. They say that their profits are due to Americans "driving more". BS. I bought a car that gets 30MPG and I still can't afford to fill it up once a week. I don't make enough money to be able to afford both gas AND health insurance.
What about a Hybrid Hudson Kit? Dany Spring has that trans adapter kit, maybe a few modifications?0 -
Gas went up to $2.50 a gallon from $1.50 a gallon - everybody started screaming and the politicians started thinking about getting re-elected. Gas dropped - to $2.00 a gallon and everybody said "Ain't that wonderful!!"
Gas jumped to $3 a gallon and everybody started screaming and the politicians started thinking about getting re-elected. Gas dropped - to $2.50 a gallon and everybody said "Ain't that wonderful!!""
Does anybody see a pattern here??? I will absolutely guarentee you gas prices will go up to $3 a gallon, or higher, come the 1st of June, and remain hi all summer long. But, come October prices will drop somewhat - mid-term elections coming up in November folks - and everybody will be happy. We'll be paying $2.75 a gallon ("Ain't that wonderful!!"), the powers that be will be re-elected and the status quo will be maintained. "Ain't that wonderful!!!"
My soapbox for the morning.

Gas company profits hit 'record levels' this last year (for how many years in a row?...).
Maryland state gas companies (no price gouging laws to protect consumers) also had the most profitable year to date...
On top of that: Local utility companies have announced a 72% rate hike. Polititians were quick to feign ignorance (little doubt there), innocence & astonishment - until proof was provided that there had been at least 22 public & private briefings concerning the rate 'hikes'...
I'll be burning my 'soapbox' for heat...
Not only that..... in the news a while back they gave the oil companies a $7 billion tax break to split between them. There's no check/balance on prices as long as the government makes tax money on the sale of gas as a percentage of price at the state local and federal level. If someone invented a power plant, or fuel that would hook up to the driveshaft of my Hudson I might consider making the conversion. At the turn of the 20th century they hadn't settled on gasoline as a fuel. There were alcohol cars, propane, electric, and steam cars. Refineries used to dump gas into the rivers as a useless byproduct or refining kerosine for lamps. Ironically using gas solved an environmental problem at the time. I bet you'll see a bunch of new fuel-saving devices come on the market !
Another thing ....why is every fuel-efficent car disturbingly small ? You'd think something could be designed that had interior space yet still weighed little. We were on our way to cars with good gas mileage in the 80's except due to bad Gov't policy trucks didn't have to get as good of mpg ratings so what did the auto industry do ? They made the SUV..... so everyone wanted a V8 and some room and they all got SUV's and no one wanted to be the only compact on a road full of trucks so everyone bought trucks and now no one gets as good of gas mileage as our Hudson's did over 50 years ago!
(tosses soap box into 46 HudsonPU's fire as well)0
