Is it possible to install splasher 6 or 8 rods the wrong way such that the dipper is not splashing the oil correctly?

You won't go far if the rod is the wrong way round! The bearing will soon run dry, overheat and self-destruct. You cannot put say, a No. 1 rod backwards on to No. 1 crank, because of the offset, but you could put a No 3 rod backwards onto No. 1. Conversely, you could put the cap on backwards. Normally this would cause some sort of bind, particularly on the earlier rods which were not precision bored like the later ('38 onwards), but may not necessarily. The numbers are stamped on the same sides of the rod and cap, so you would have to either blind, dumb, or both to make this mistake.
