tachmometer recommendations?

Can someone recommend a good yet inexpensive tachometer for testing purposes (not to install in my car)? My car is a 6-volt, positive ground; would only a 6-volt tach work? I'd like to find something in a local chain store (Advance Auto, Sears, NAPA) as opposed to sending away for it.

Thanks for any recommendations!

Jon, We use a 12v test tac by hooking it up to an aux 12v battery, positive and neg, but hook the coil wire to your coil - should work OK

Jon, I use a Sears tune-up tester that has RPM, point dwell, and other functions. Not too expensive; works on 4, 6, and 6 cyl. cars. It operates on 12v, so when using it on a 6v Hudson I just grab my trusty and cheap 6v lantern battery and insert it in a series connection with the 6v car battery when hooking up the tester ( i.e., . pos of lantern battery to neg of car battery; neg of lantern battery to neg lead of the tester; pos lead of the tester to ground. Works fine. I do the same when using my 12v timing light on the 6v car.

I too can vouch for the Sears Craftsman Engine Analyzer. Cheap, portable, and accurate enough. I've used a jumper battery box before, but it seems like I had to double the reading to get the proper dwell reading though. Good thing i wrote it in my old service manual!
