More 39 problems

I am progressing with the 39 series 91, thanks to you guys. I have removed the oil pan- cleaned it , primed the oil pump and it is now running. Also had to remove the gas tank to get the rocks and gravel out. The height of the filler cap was undoubtedly too intriguing for some young fella. As I stated earlier, it had not been used since 1973. My next problem that I need your help with is the clutch. As per your advise I drained the old clutch oil and replaced it. Since I have the engine running now , I tried to get it in gear, but all I can get is grinding gears. I assume the clutch disk is frozen to the pressure plate or to the flywheel. The car can be pushed if the trans is in nuetral, if that is important. Also, it is very difficult if at all possible to operate the shift lever while the car

is not running. It seems to help some if the clutch is depressed. Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

David :confused:

    The clutch disc is probably stuck to the pressure plate and/or the flywheel. Cut a board the correct length between the clutch pedal and steering wheel to hold the clutch pedal down. leave it that way for a while. Sometimes it pops loose quickly, sometimes it takes a few days. Trying to start it in gear can be dangerous, but sometimes works. preferably with the bumper against a tree! There are some threads here on the subject. give it a search and good luck.

    David;

    I had a 37 Terraplane with the same problelm. I raised the rear wheels off the ground. Put the trans in high gear with engine off. Then start the engine and let it run in gear for a while. Mine broke lose in just a few minutes. Good luck and Keep us posted.

    Yup, see the CLUTCH SOLUTION thread for a discussion about putting a solvent in the clutch. Then rotate the engine a few degrees each day to allow the solvent to absorb into the corks on the disc, all the time pumping your clutch pedal. Once it busts loose you are in free...you'd have to leave it sit a looong time for this sort of problem to happen.

    Meanwhile, you note that one cannot move the shift lever without depressing the clutch. Correct! There is an interlock on the transmission that prevents the gears from being changed unless the pedal is depressed. You will see a vertical steel bar on each side of the forward part of the transmission, with a linkage to the clutch, which accomplishes this. So don't strain your shift lever by trying to move it when the clutch isn't depressed, or you may have it snap off at the floor, which happened to me a couple of years ago!
  • the sure waly to brake it loose is this, put car in long driveway, jack up rear end 4 inches off the ground put it in low and start ilt, whells will keep turning, rev it up to about 1500 RPM. hold the wheel tight and have someone drop the jack quickly, you will either 1, break the clutch loose, 2 spin the wheels and take off down the driveway, be prepared to turn off ign key and brake hard, if not broke loose repeat again, have broken dozens loose this way and never hurt any mechanical part, good luck BILL ALBRIGHT
