:) For those who have "met" Russell Chilton and DOC this is a position report for this fine young man and his Hudson Hornet DOC. Both came to visit me this evening. Russell and DOC are on the final leg of a journey that has taken them from thier home in Va to thier soon to be new home in Texas. As all of you Hudson owners know we spent a hour or so non stop talking Hudsons and the super experience Russell has had as he and DOC took in the roads of the USA. About dusk Russell and DOC pointed south for a planned dinner date with Russell's Dad.

Good to have the opportunity to meet another Hudsonite who first "met" me here on the forum.

Cheers from the Heart Of Texas!;)

  • One of these days Ken, I'm gonna make that same journey.

You and Jim Guinn are largely responsible for infecting me with this disease!

Glad to hear Russell is enjoying his Hudsonitis also.

Alex... Russell will be moving to San Antonio area... he is definately ready to be an active part of the HOT Hudson scene. I am sure you will meet soon. Jim Peterson in San Marcos is very interested in getting together with HOT Hudsonites and reenvigorating the chapter... so I expect new and fresh ideas from all of you newly annoited Hudsonites.

    Cheers ;)
  • Ken, I would really like to get down your way and see your cars. I am up here in Mansfield. Maybe someday I will run down there.

    Bob
  • Bob... never too late... tonite 1 April 2006 ... Cruise in at the Church of the Open Door. Bellmead Texas, I-35 and Lake Shore Drive... Just off the Interstate and just north of Waco. 200 + rods and antiques on first Saturdays... 6-10 PM no admission charge and good fun...so far I am the only participant in a Hudson...

    Looking forward to seeing you
  • My circuitous journey has come to a close (for now, at least). I finally got back to the 'puter today to send Ken and others e-mails, etc. when, lo and behold, Ken has already filled you in!!

Doc and I did 1900 miles over three days (not too rough)-the main purpose was to get Doc to my old man so he can baby-sit her while Vicki and I finish selling our house here in Virginia, finish up our business obligations and get ready to move home to Texas!! Yee-haw!

Doc and I left Virginia and headed west to Indy where I had the pleasure of meeting Larry Kennedy and spending a few hours talking Hudsons. Mr. Kennedy probably thinks I'm just the village idiot back where I came from, because I was constantly wiping my mouth to make sure I wasn't drooling down my chin whilst looking and talking about his cars (and I use the plural "cars" there very loosely). He was very gracious spending as much time with me as he did, as he doesn't really enjoy losing time he could be spending working on his Hudsons.

From there it was south straight to Ken Cate's house in Waco where I had a most enjoyable time! We spent a couple of hours together, but in all sincerity, I wish I could've spent 2 or 3 more. Within the next couple months, I'm sure we'll meet up again. Thanks again, Ken!!

For those of you that have never driven cross-country in your Hudson, let me give this small piece of advice: DO IT AS SOON AS POSSIBLE!!! Best damn trip I've ever had! Doc was happy and performed flawlessly (of course, my pre-tune-up routine lasted several weeks prior to our trip). One thing to remember if you decide to take this trip: and don't forget this, it's important! Take some string. Let me explain:

If you like people like I do, you'll spend a lot of time waving and/or honking at . . . everyone. Yes, that's it . . . pretty much everyone. And, as much as I was getting a kick out of it, after being in a one-man parade for 8 or 9 or 10 hours straight, your hand tends to get a little tired . . . so, eventually it led me to having one hand hold my other wrist so that I could actually manually wave my left hand by shaking my left wrist with my right hand. Of course, this isn't so safe, and, . . . remembering that I had thrown my spool of string in the trunk, I just tied my wrist to the top of the door and let it sway there a little as I tooled on down the road. Probably looked like I had been taking waving lessons from the queen, but, hey, whatever works, right?

O.k., just kidding. But I did do a LOT of waving and honking and talking Hudsons every single time I stopped without exception . . . which was just AWESOME!!

For those of you that wanted a little more scientific and or economical discussion: I got 12.3 miles to the gallon over the course of the trip. Mr. Cates was kind enough to loan me his UNI-SYN tool so that I can get the final tune on the carburetors right (did it by ear and test-driving, before). He assures me I can get 16mpg once I'm properly adjusted. So, gas was slightly expensive, but I woulda' paid twice the price and had just as much of a hoot. We varied our speed from time to time, but we'd run anywhere from 65-85. Doc'd run 90 probably all day long as we'd often run 85 in 75-100 mile clips.

Ya'll get those Hudsons out and drive-em! There really is nothing quite like it in the world.

To my future Texan neighbors: get ready, 'cause I'm a 'comin'!!
