After I bought this car I was under the rear and used the gas tank to pull myself out on my creeper and the gas tank moved. I tightened the straps, however the pickup hose at the gas tank has leaked ever since. I have made gaskets to solve the problem, but it still leaks a little when the tank is completly full. Does anyone have any suggestions? I would appreciate any solutions to my problem. thank you.

It Sounds Like It Might Be The Fill Tube Hose Rather Than The Pick Up Tube The Pick Up Tube Is Used All The Time The Car Is Running The Fill Tube Hose Only Has Gas In It When Filling And When The Tank Is Realy Full I Would Drop The Tank Replace The Fill Tube Hose And Make Sure You Use Clamps On It I Away Put A Bit Of SilEcone On The Tube Before I Side Them Together

No disagreement with Pauls suggestions... you used the term gaskets in your post and that leads me to believe you are talking about the connection at the top front of the tank. If so, and you have had that tube out and replaced gaskets you need to pull the tube again. This tube is soldered to the mounting plate and when you pulled yourself out with the tank loose your actions potentially cracked the solder seal where the tube is connected to the mount plate. If my supposition is correct... let the tank deplete to 1/2 or less pull the feed tube examine the fit of the tube to the mount. The tube should not move in the mount. If it moves resolder the tube to the mount. When you replace the assembly assure you use a qualtiy vegtable based gasket material and use a gasoline proof sealant on both sides of the gasket and each screw thread (Screws penetrate the tank) Hope this helps.

    Cheers;)
  • My 54 leaked at the pick-up tube like you said yours does. As Ken said, the tube is soldered in and sure enough mine was cracked. I re-soldered it and when I replaced it in the tank I used a sealer around the mount and made sure to seal the screws, as they do go all the way through the flange. One thing I ran into was that after I put the mount back in, my gas gauge wouldn't work properly. I had cut the gas line to put in an electric pump and used a couple of rubber hoses to connect to the gas line. The gas line acts as a ground for the sending unit, and I had to run a short groung wire from the tank to the frame rail, works fine now....

  • thank you to all. I will pull out pick-up pipe and check under a magnifying glass to make sure and re solder. I ran into the same problem when I put in an electric fuel pump and the gas guage stopped working, so I added a groung wire to the frame.
