Bought a 1954 Super Jet
Hi all,
I came across this forum and just thought I would write about the 1954 Super Jet I won last night on Ebay:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1,1&item=4624968345
Seems like I got a pretty good deal... any opinions?
Going to pick it up today... I'm excited. Always wanted to own a Hudson. I'd like a full size Hudson but this is about all I can manage for price (and size) right now. Reading about the Jets though, I think these are pretty interesting cars. They seem a bit forgotten (outside of Hudson fans).
Apparently the car is just about roadworthy except that the taillights don't work. Hopefully an easy fix but I'll probably use my AAA membership to tow it home. If it hasn't been lubed for around 20 years I don't think 80 miles home would be very good for it.
I'll post more info and pics when I get my hands on it!
Carl

From where it says the car is located you must be in Southern California ? I am in Lakewood next to Long Beach. Alot of great folks and information here and good Luck with your project, Ron0 -
Carl Thanks for sharing your good fortune and interest in Hudsons. As Ron has already said there is a large family of Hudsonites all round the are of Lake Elsinore. 80 miles north or south puts you right in the midst of a very active Hudson group... Check this link and it will present you with the contact person for each of these clubs... Once again... welcome to the world of Hudson Happiness...http://www.hudsonclub.org/ go to the right of the page and you will find each of the California chapters.
BTW... see my site below... not Jet orientated ... but will connect you with many resources who will know Jets and beable to help you.
Cheers;)0 -
Welcome to the madhouse, Carl! Bring your technical questions to the Forum (and the Chatroom too, though you usually have to wait til evening to find anyone there). If that car has sat for a long time without being run, you may want to consider dropping the pan and cleaning out the congealed oil before running the engine for any length of time. Also, if you're not in the H-E-T yet, do consider joining. The magazine alone is worth the $25 price of admission!0

Congratulations - you have bought one of the best all-round cars built by Hudson. One small point - you mention not being lubed. The most important lube point is the one most often overlooked, on top of the stub axle pivot pin on both sides. This a threaded bushing, and if neglected will wear out and cause problems. Good luck with your new acquisition. I've been driving my Jet for 35 years, so let's know if there's any points your unsure about.

I'm not into the Jets so much - but you got a great deal for a runner and from the pictures the overall condition doesn't look too bad.
Welcome to Hudsons - even if its not the one you really wanted its a great start to the Hudson collection!0 -
Welcome to the wonderful wacky world of Hudsons. Jets were good little cars, I think you got a good one! As above, join the HET club and you'll be welcomed with open arms!0

Jets are nice handling little Hudsons. Like my Jet Liner. But then dont think I ever looked at a Hudson I didnt like.0

Carl,
I'll add my congratulations to those offered by the others. You will not find a better, friendlier, more knowledgeable or more proactive group of guys than these Hudsonites. If you check the other forums on this site you will find that they go for months without any response while the Hudson forum has many per day. Your Jet looks like a fine vehicle that will bring you lots of enjoyment.
Welcome to Hudsonville

Thanks everyone! So I got the Super Jet home thanks to AAA. She runs very well, in fact she sounds like a sewing machine and the exhaust is nice and quiet. Needs a lot of work though. Important thing is that she is totally rust free. But the biggest thing is the interior. It is all original and has baked in desert sun for 50+ years. Touching the headliner seems to create a cloud of... mohair dust? It's not very pleasant. The whole interior is very, very brittle. Once I go over the basic mechanical stuff I'll probably look to have the interior professionally redone. Any tips where to start? Any recommendations in the L.A. area? There's a classic car interior shop down the street from me in North Hollywood that I'll probably try first. Is it possible to match the original fabric?
Other things I need to do:
check out the brakes - they work but not as strongly as they should
clutch pedal adjustment (return spring is weak)
check out radio - not working
get wiper blades and free up the stuck wiper motor
find a spare tire
That's off the top of my head! If anyone has a cheap spare tire in the L.A. area I'd be interested. Condition not important, a proper spare that holds air is all I need for now.
Looking forward to getting her registered and driving to work!

I'm not trying to sell club memberships here, but you may want to seek out and join your local H-E-T chapter (California has several) so that you can begin to make contacts, find others who own Jets, learn about reputable (and not so reputable) body, upholstery and general repair shops, and so forth. The list of chapters and their contact persons are shown at the H-E-T home page -- http://www.hudsonclub.org/ . Follow the links to CHAPTERS, then click WESTERN.0

Congrats on the new Jet! I'm sure you're going to enjoy it. I bought mine on eBay last fall and have had lots of fun with it. Enjoy!0
