Spring Shackle Removal

Help! I'm trying to remove the rear spring rear shackle on a 1936 Terraplane. When I turn the threaded shackle bushing, it stays in the spring and wants to push the U-shaped shackle out. Is this OK? Shouldn't the bushing unscrew from the spring instead? I just want to get one spring loose to remove the rear axle. Thanks for any advice.

Yes, the bushing should unscrew from the spring eye at the same time as it unwinds from the shackle. Have you got all the weight off? It is easier to do both top and bottom bushings simultaneously, so the shackles wind out evenly, otherwise you will have the spring tyring to move sideways as you have described. Watch out, I think it's the left upper rear shackle is left hand thread!

  • The weight is off..I'll try again tomorrow. IF the bushing does not come out, is there a workaround?
