Best Place to buy Stainless Fasteners
Been down this road quite a few times, and while you can pick up the most common stuff most anywhere, the best and most comprehensive selection and best prices for the restoration folks can be found at Totally Stainless in PA. They are a mail order place that has a great catalog to order from and almost always ships the same day. They do have a website at http://totallystainless.net/totally.html and 1.800.767.4781. Another great resource, especially if you are into pre 1940 stuff, is Tioga Stainless. They have the obsolete, large head bolts and other funky stuff that is hard to come by. They also do custom work. You can find the guy at Hershey and most major east coast shows. Dont have is number in front of me.
One other thing to mention is with regard to polishing them. If you want to make a bolt, screw head or nut look as though it is chrome plated, stainless polishes up very nicely on a buffing wheel and some white compound. I sometimes will use my bench top belt sander with a 220 grit belt and grind off the casting marks on the bolt head. A few minutes on the buffing wheel and look at that, a pretty chrome like shiney bolt that will never rust. I use them when dressing up stuff on projects and have to say it really saves money on plating. By the way, totally stainless sells these really cool tools that allow you to hold each size bolt and nut for polishing. The only downside about making them pretty is that if you dont have a good tool to hold them with, you can mess up the threads or creat a neat little bullet that can do damage when it flies off that wheel. They also have a universal tool for doing washers up.

Good info, Dennis. I've not dealt with Totally Stainless, but over the years I've found the folks at Gardner-Westcott pretty hard to beat. Don't recall wanting something and finding they didn't carry it. Good selection of both stainless and chrome fasteners, and they'll fill a small order quickly and without a ridiculous handling and mailing charge. http://www.gardner-westcott.com.0
