How much work does this need ? Is this the correct interior ? Color ? If it is not a Special, wouldn't the color be 2 tone ?

  • The car is not a special, The special typically did not have an arm rest in the back seat, or the stainless trim that ran all the way around the roof, and used the trim from the super wasp on the sides. All cars could be had with a 2-tone or single color paint job. 1954 was a time of transition for Hudson, what with the merger and all, and just about anything went, as the factory tried to use up stock they had on hand.

I have a Special. This car on E Bay is A Hornet. The interior is not correct, but everything else looks stock. The floors are rusted out and need replaced. Hard to tell where there may be more rust. Its always a risk not seeing car. Paint looks right. Ask if all numbers match. If motor # matches serial #. Good Luck!!

Looks like the same interior material that was put in the 50 C8 !

The Hornet on eBay has a certain amount of rust. All 54s that have been used as normal transportation vehicles and were not blessed with AZ, S. California of other dry climes have rust in the rear fender areas. This car is one that shows such rust in the pictures. The stainless on the car was not removed the last time the car was repainted and there is at least one picture showing rust at the edge of the chrome that is definately originating from the trim retainer but sadly has begun to eat the fender too. The bad floor is obvious. The cars interior while done to what appears to be stock specs for pleats.. the materials are not right. The top of all doors would normally have pleated vinyl. This car originally came with a green iterior as evidenced by the dash and steering wheel colors. Under the hood the paint prep and mask off was poor at best... this is a tip off as to the quality of the over all job. Missing parking light lenses are available both in the Hudson used and new supplier markets. KGap stocks them too. Is the car a good deal? Are you looking for reasonablly priced driver... or a car to buy for investment? The car is definately a driver... does it have rough spots... yes... can it be enjoyed now... ? looks to be a driver... inspection is the only confimation of condition.

This car caught my eye as it looked remarkably like my former 22K mile sedan... but on closer examination... not the same car.. besides my former car had a perfect OEM green interior...

    GOOD LUCK

    Ken,

Thanks so much for the insight. I sometimes get to excited and react with emotion rather than wisdom. I'm really looking for a 54 Club Coupe but in 5 yrs of searching I've yet to see one for sale. I guess I'll keep on looking. Thanks.

Don't we all! Depends on your needs, I saw a '54 coupe down at Bill Albright's a couple of weeks ago. It needs everything done but appeared pretty complete and probably is one of those rust free southern California cars. :D I didn't look at it that close up but I'm sure Bill can give you the information.

I found and bought a # 4 condition 54 Hornet Club Coupe last summer on e-bay. It was listed in small print with another car so people didn't see it. Original California black plate car, 100% rust free and near perfect body. It also has the matching number engine. I paid $1,500 for it plus spent another $300 to pick it up. I feel I stole that car. There was a 54 Hornet special coupe (Brougham) forsale here on the forum a few days ago for I think $2,600. Runs and drives. I think that is a great deal aswell. I like the club coupe look better but that car is more rare. Niels

    Niels,

I'm looking for the club coupe body as well. Sounds like you really got lucky. I always wanted to know , What is a black plate car ? What does that really mean ?

Thanks for the heads up on the special.
  • "Black plate" was the color of the old California license plates from about 1960ish to 1970ish. Generally speaking, if an old car has black California plates on it, it is used to describe a car with an origin or history in Califorinia and this typically implies a solid framed, rust free vehicle.

hudsonkid knew of a 54 coupe about a year or so ago. I don't know if anyone ever bought it. I think he even put a picture of it on the forum here. Send him a message and see if it's still around... I believe he thought the owner wanted too much considering the work that it would still need, but might be worth a look.

They're out there depending on the price and condition you are looking for. Neils just posted a 54 2 dr sedan like mine. Appears to be all there but needs rust repairs. Neils has a 54 coupe he might sell. It's a fixer upper but it is basically all there. He also came across a 53 coupe with Twin H for around 8000.00 up in Northern Ca. He passed on it so it may still be available.

Do you know what shape the 53 coupe was in ?
