Just to clarify: you have been attempting adjustments on the linkage, is that correct?
  • It sounds to me like you might be missing the clip that holds the crossover cable from moving , or you don't have the cable adjusted correctly. There is one bolt towards the bottom of the steering column that holds a bracket that is 90 degrees. If you loosen it the bracket will move up and down.

My 47 Pickup had 123 but went into R hard. I adjusted the bracket on the end of the column, (as in loosen the 1/2 in bolthead and move up or down). Went into R fine, but wouldn't go into 3. Another adjustment and I now have all the gears.

    The adjustment procedure is thus

    (a) Place shift lever in extreme upper position.

    (b) Loosen the control wire anchor bracket bolt at the lower end of the steering column. Pull the anchor bracket up until all slack is removed from the casing, and the shift shaft in the transmission is fully over to the low and reverse side.

    (c) Tighten the anchor bolt. The contol wire anchor should have clearance at top and bottom.

If it still jumps out of gear, you may need to get a manual from the club store, as there are 7 contributing factors.
  • thank you for the reply. was away for a couple of days. We have adjusted as you sugested. Still cant get all four gears. We are going to remove the top of the trans cover see if we see anythang. Is there a spring on a ball under the cover? thanks again will keep trying.
  • tnanks for your reply. I was away for acouple of days. we do have the bracket you talked about. Have adjusted it and taken the slop out of the wire. cant seem to hit the adjustement. we are going to look into the top of the trans next. thanks again.
  • thanks for the reply. we have adjusted the hard rod as well as taken the slack out of the cable. Have also adjusted the bracket at the end of the rod column. we are going to look into the top of the trans cover thanks again.
