Maeco Shocks

Hi all,

I just pulled a full set of these off of my Hornet. By the look of them, they could be original. Anyone heard of this brand of shocks? Could MAECO be an acronym?

  • I think I may have answered my own question. MAECO = Monroe Automobile Equipment Company. Looks like my old shocks may indeed be original. To bad they only lasted 53 years! LOL

  • Correct you are Dave.
  • As far as new shock go. I need some. Are there aftermarket, or do I need to find some similar from a newer vehicle and make them work?

Taken from my tips section http://home.earthlink.net/~dsollon/public.htm/tips.htm

    Gas shocks for stepdowns-

. Advance Auto Parts Gas Rear-PA 15740070 11.99 each Above are Advance Auto Parts numbers

Front shock numbers from Jim Chatfield They are KYB gas shocks, part number KG4503 and sell for about $90 a pair.

    NAPA-use 94080 for rear,

From Pete Booz : correct Gabriel stepdown gas shock #s: rear 81147, front 82028

Gabriel 82026 FRONT (GAS) Monroe Sensatracks # 5751

    MONROE 31094 REAR (GAS)

Shocks for Jet- I got the following on Terry Ray`s Jet page

Shocks (rear) Monroe # 5601024 - NAPA Regal Ride 1128 - Central Auto Parts (EA 31125)

Shocks (front) NAPA Regal Ride 1126

Front shock support plates for 1940 thru step down - better than new available from Doug Wildrick @ 30.00 a pair.
  • Actually you can get new shocks, but they won't be like the fluid filled shocks of old. These numbers are about 5 years old so they might have changed out the numbers.Rear: Monroe 20751, Front NAPA 94015 also check on #31176. If you are having trouble finding front shock mounting plates because yours are broken, missing etc, try using the shocks for a Volvo 164 for the front. They come with a flat bracket already on the shock so your worries are over. In case you want replacement new plates try Doug Wildrick for new plates for the front. Good luck Mo.
  • I though those MAECO shocks were original. But after 53 years, the fronts were leaking and the bushings on all turned to mush. I used:

    Monroe 5751 @$21.99 - Drop in

Monroe 31094 @$24.17 - Have to trim top bushings a tad

    Both available at Murrary's.

I mentioned where I purchased and what I paid because there was a $22.00 difference (per 5751 shock) between my good local parts shop and Murray's.
