Starving for fuel?
My Dad has a 50 pacemaker and on warm days when under a load (going up a hill, or accelerating from a stop sign) every once and a while it will cut out and act like it is vapor locking. We'll probably be rebuilding the fuel pump pretty soon just to make sure that is not the problem. Just wondering if anyone else has had any problems like this before. Thanks.

I'm not sure rebuilding the pump will necessarily solve your problem. Have you checked the sediment bowls and filters for crud that may be slowing the movement of the gas? Examined the steel fuel lines for rust-through (causing tiny pinholes, which mean the pump would be sucking air)? Does your carburetor sit on plenty of spacers, and is there a metal air deflector in there to help disperse the heat? Have you tried wrapping the fuel line (from fuel pump to carb) in something that would help insulate it from the heat?0

We've wrapped the fuel line from the pump to the carb and checked the filters. I didn't think about the rust-through, I'll check that out. I can't remember if it has a heatshield or not, I don't think it does I'm going over there tomarrow I'll take a look. Thanks for the ideas.0

Hi---It sounds like rust shale in the gas tank to me. Tough to check out, but a likely suspect.---Cliff Minard.0

A good friend of mine has a 29 molel A and had a problem like that. We looked everywhere and at everything. It ended up being the gas cap vent had a small piece of dirt in it. It would drive great at slow speeds but when you needed alot of fuel volume it would cut out. cleaned the vent, problem gone. good luck0

Has anyone dealth with a Gas Tank Renu franchise? They have locations in just about every state which restore gas tanks to "Like New." Lifetime guarantee.0

Several folks in my chapter (in the Baltimore-Washington area) have dealt with the one in Baltimore. I have never heard anything negative about them.0

Jon B, Thanks, that's good to know. After cleaning my fuel pump filter of what looks like used coffee grounds, I think I need to give the local rep a call.0
