Exhaust manifold damper

Previous owner had disconnected the exhaust manifold damper and I would like to fix it. This is on a '54 Hornet. The spring just seems to hang there loose but the damper itself seems to move easily. Do I really need to remove the manifold itself to fix it, as it implies in the shop manual? I'd appreciate any suggestions, thanks.

  • If damper is free and holding pin in place, all you need to do is replace spring.
  • I guess the question is how "tight" do you make the spring before you anchor it? Or, how many times does it wrap around the pin before you anchor it so it works correctly? Thanks again for the help.
