Found Oil Pressure Problem.....Bizarre.

I was right, I did not have any oil pressure. I pulled the line off the front of the pump cranked it a few times and nothing came out. Pulled the pump off and tested it manually, and found that the pump itself is working fine. Finally figured out that the pump is not being driven by the gear on the camshaft. Not sure why yet, but that is the problem. I am going back out to drop the pan to try and see what is what. Maybe the darn gear is too worn on the camshaft, I dont know. All I do know is that something totally not right.

Dennis, what sort of engine are we talking about?

Any ideas? I am baffled. Too late to drop the pan tonight. Will do it in the morning. Stared at it for an hour and it made my head spin. I just dont understand what I am missing. Guess I wont know until I can get up under there and look.
  • Dennis, you had the oil pump out, what did the drive gear look like? if it is OK the next thing you should do is remove the oil pressure regulator and the external oil feed lines and see if they are blocked with debris. If there is evidance of a large amount of sludge in these components you will need to pull the pan and clean it as well as the oil pick up and screen.
  • Also double check were the pans and the pickup meet. You may be sucking air.

The problem may be the worm gear on the cam may be worn out. I know this happened on the thirties models, and don't know if they altered anything to overcome the problem. You can see the worm gear if have the pump off. If the gear is gone, you either have to replace the camshaft or get it built up and re-machined. I have seen them rebuilt. Check that first. if the gear is okay, then you have only the intake to worry about. there should be an O-ring around the pipe in the sump to ensure there is an air-tight seal. Otherwise there is little can go wrong with the punp itself. I assume you have tried it manually with the intake into a pot of oil? Good luck,

    Geoff.
  • I am sucking air. After all day that is what I finally figured out anyway. I was missing the O ring that goes around the tube that protrudes out of the oil pan up into the block/oil pump. Thanks to all.
  • Good show. Now you can enjoy your Hudson 8, They are a marvel of smooth.!!! Hudson 8'sd rule.!!!
