Does this look like the original Paint and Scheme ?
  • That is a pretty nice looking car. I think that is a newer paint job. looks like Spring green and white lower. Not a factory combo but fine for that car.

Is it possible that some Dealers painted some of there cars that way , just to sell ? Also do you think that the interior would have come with those paint colors ?
  • I'm 45 minutes from the car if some wants me to look at it. Just pay my gas. Niels
  • The interior choice was up to you and yes the dealer may have done it that way as the customer wanted it. I have a real respect for the old Hudson dealers they would do just about anything you wanted to get your business.

Usually when a car has the green exterior it got the green or blue interior but that doesn't mean the original buyer didn't ask for it this way.

I have the original color chips and tu-tone combos and this scheme is not listed but in 54 when Hudson was trying to get rid of cars I am thinking you could have ordered it this way if you wanted it.

I have some factory ads where the cars are painted in colors that Hudson did not offer I always shake my head at that. I guess they custom painted those cars to be used in ads and the advertising firm may have said I want it bright red as it shows speed and sporty feel.

Neils , Would you mind ? I'll be happy to pay you the gas. It seems to good to be true. Would you take it for a drive as well ? Thanks

Thanks 51hornetA. I guess they did what they had to do. I've seen 53's with the Spring green and white but not 54's. I've seen 54 specials with the spring green only .

I had a 1954 2-dr Dodge Station wagon restored a couple of years ago. It was all red when the California dealer got it, but the dealer painted the roof white before it was sold new. The original owner (still around) said he didn't request that, it appeared in the showroom that way. Apparently this was quite common practice out here...before a/c was common it was thought to keep the car cooler. Nice looking result, too...

I've contacted the seller and have arranged to look at it tomorrow. I'll keep you posted. Niels

This car looks to me like it probably was option "RM" Palm Beach Green lower with a Coronation Cream top - The dealer could have added the Coronation Cream lower rear quarter trim, as I know we did this quite often for our customers. The W1 Brown interior was not available when the '54s were first anounced with the "RM" color combination, however, as the 54 selling season wore on, you could get just about anything you wanted to put on the order sheet. Even Super Wasps & Hornet Specials with Hornet interiors.

We sold Super Wasps with the 308 Twin-H engine, and our service rep showed up one day in July driving a '54 Super Jet 2 dr. with a factory installed 308 Twin-H engine installed in it! ! ! !

Beleive me, they were really trying, but the media coverage and speculation in the summer of 1954 was not good. In spite of it all, my dad's little one horse dealership in an Ohio town of merely 1200 people broke the 100 mark for the 1954 selling season.

Jerry, Thanks so much for sharing all that. It's a real gift to get the inside pespective , as you have , about the things that went on in 54 at the dealers. I for one would love to hear any and all experience's that you might be willing to share about Hudson.

How cool would it be to find that Super Jet with the factory 308?
  • Harry,

I went to see this car. Give me a call at (310) 502-5335 and I'll give you the scoop. Niels
  • So what was the verdict on this car? was the frame ok? any rust we couldn't see? looks like a pretty good deal right now.

The car is a nice clean original California Car. No rust, nice interior, runs and drives nice. Mechanicly B+ . The Outside Top and side below Qtr panel is actually Light pink not White. That would have to be changed. The underside is very clean no rust. The car is well worth where it is bid and might be worth high teens. It's a nice original California car that was in storage for 30 yrs and has a repaint. Paint is decent. Chrome and brightwork is A+ .
  • car sold for just over 10K someone got a really good deal here.
  • I had gone to see this car for Harry54. It was a VERY nice original car that simply needed some paint. Excellent original interior, good engine, brakes, etc. Even the 6 volt radio worked. Drove beautifully. As 51hornetA mentioned, this was a great deal for someone.

There may be a reason why it went at such a low price. When I tried to find it on the 'completed' auction list at Ebay, nothing appeared under '1954 Hudson" or "Hudson Hornet". Apparently the seller typed "Husdon". So....anyone looking under the 'Hudson' category wouldn't have seen it. Thus...fewer bidders. There's a lesson there.

Been looking for a '78 to '85 Eldorado Biarritz for a daily driver, on eBay and Craigs list. I've developed a lists of "alternate" spellings of Biarritz, and am surprised at how many more cars I am finding.

I tried to win that car but got bumped at the end. That was a great buy.

You've hit upon my "pet peeve". In a true auction, nobody misses out because they "get bumped" at the end- auctioneer keeps taking bids until everyone drops out. When you think about it, the only ones who should be happy with the present set up (auction absolutely ends at a predetermined time) are the chiselers who are trying to buy as cheaply as possible. Legitimate buyers who aren't as quick (or don't have the "sniper" software) miss out, seller doesn't get as much money as he should have, and eBay's commission is lower than it should be. I recently wanted a Hudson that was on eBay, and I ended up going to the seller's place and buying it on the spot, so I wouldn't get sniped out. They should end the auction at xx:xx:xx time, or 20 minutes after the last bid is entered, whichever is later. Think I'll start campaigning eBay.
