I would have to disagree with you Jay at least here. My Hornet gets tons of attention wherever I go here. I can tell you Neils 48 Commodore gets so much attention you darn near can't get anywhere in it and it looks just like Miss Daisy's car. For me I am all for the hot rodding, but I try within reason to stay within the period of the car at least from a general appearance standpoint. I have upgraded my car with gas shocks, urethane bushings a GM truck trans mount and soon a Ford truck driveshaft support. All improvements but still maintain the looks of the original car. Plan to convert to 12V, install a Pertronix ignition, change springs with increased rate and 1 inch lower,Twin H and maybe headers down the road. Still will look and feel like a Hudson only improved.

As for induction, I think some tweaks can be done with the exhaust manifold that will be enough for what a basically stock flathead can put out. As for the Twin H, so far there are no available rebuilt exchanges and no rebuild kits, at least through normal connections. Maybe I should have gone woth the Clifford and the 4 bbl

Maybe its a So. Cal. thing. Maybe the meets are larger. But I can tell you around here, when I go to the Friday or Saturday night meets (usually around 50 to 200 cars)around the valley here, flatheads don't make any splash. In fact, the last one I went to last Saturday night had 2 Hudsons, a primered '49 4 door with a 400SBC, mustang rear end, and needing a whole lotta work and a restored '53 Hornet Coupe. The only people hanging around the Hornet were the owners! There were lots of folks around the primered '49 with the SBC. Even at the Good Guys meet here last year, no one was hanging around the only Hudson there, at least on the day I was there (all the modified hot rods got the long looks and crowds). But all our meets are generally "all makes and years" so competition for people to look at your car is more varied. Most of the cars which attend these are modifieds with the occasional original. And as far as period correct goes, for me, that is way too restrictive. But each person has their own likes and dislikes and thats cool.

I guess the Arizona folks just need to get their cars out mre often.

    Jay :-)

Probably the heat there, they just get modifying like crazy when they start with A/C :D

So where do we go for kits and rebuild stuff for WA 1's. I am coming up empty here so far.
  • Hey Rob,

Call Tim Cheney or Dave Kostansek at (440) 994-9173 or (440) 293-4079. They should have them- just give them the brass tag number or number stamped on the carbs or simply tell them what you have. These guys are great to do business with and top notch stuff too.

When I go to car shows anything with a SBC I could care less. They are belly button motors. Nothing against using them, it just does not matter, everybody does them. The off beat hopped up orginal or lets say a Pontiac or Buick (nailhead) V8 in an early roadster well that is interesting, it shows imagination, initiative and orginiality.

We have kits in stock and rebuild WA 1's. Just did a set for Brian Bennett in Iowa--bored out the venturi's and put the 38mm weber venturi in so his 402 cam would run and let the modified boys with their 350 and store bought modifications looking at his exhaust.

209-968-6157 if you want the kits
  • if i want to see a SBC i'll go to the local dirt track!!

Thanks Randy I will keep you in mind. We got the Western Region meet next week and I am planning to take all my Twin H stuff with me and see what all the experts say. What I need, what I am missing, etc, etc. When you do the rebuilds, do you replate the hardware? I can rebuild them my self, but I don't have the facilities to really make them look new.

All parts are media blasted. I can repair the lose throttle shafts by puting bronze bushings in the base. Usually paint the base black, paint the other gold or silver using the paint from eastman.

  • Sorry guys, I didn't mean to get the topic a little sidetracked, I'll start (yet another) hudson vs. other power thread since there sems to be interest in discussing. I didn't mean to offend anyone with my post and please don't hold it against me, I am a true Hudson and Hudson Power fan :-)

FYI - I love the twin-h and if my Super-Six had one and it was running well I'd keep it original, but I'm at a point where upgrading my 262 to 308 or finding a 308 and all the twin-h stuff then building it up as much as possible just seems like a lot more then I want to get into when my goal is make a Hudson Rod out of this Super-Six (I've decided to go the Caddy 500 route with this Super-Six). I've been looking for a Hudson for a long time and finally have my "FIRST" one (impulse buy), but there will be a Hornet with original power and vintage racing looks in my garage someday. Anyone have any pictures of any famous Salt Flat Hudson Hornet race cars ;-) ?
