I need to make stepdown door cards shortly and I'm going to try it using fibreglass.
There are 2 advantages if the idea works.
One is, it does not matter if the back of the door card gets wet, ie you don't have to worry about sealing the back of it with the usual sheets of plastic, sticky tape and mastic.
Other is you can make a one piece door card0 -
There are two other materials you might want to consider. In the past wood panel board as well as luan board have been used (luan for closer to the right thickness ) . The other material used is plastic laminate. It is more flexible and about as durable. Big advantage is ,unlike paper and wood,it isn't vunerable to water especially on a convert. Lesson here is, don't throw away any of your old paneling until you have a replaced piece.0

I'm not sure precisely what you're looking for (is '49 convertible door cardboard different from the standard antique car door panel material?). You can purchase the standard type of black waterproof door panel material, in 32" x 48" sheets, for $10 apiece from Restoration Specialties & Supply in Windber, Pa. The 39" x 65" version is available for $14. They bring this stuff out to the larger antique auto flea markets around the country. Or, go to their website at http://www.restorationspecialties.com/0
