37 t-plane coupe.
hello all ! this may sound wierd, i want to get the floor pan un-bolted to check my trans. this huge acess pan leaves all kinds of room for me to work. but, how do i get that seat out ??. pull all carpet out, and can i put seat fully back to remove this plate ? i would like in-put first before i dis-assemble, it is too nice out and season here is 6 months. so, i do not want to tear it down. thanks, dermot.

If you are asking whether the seat needs to come out in order to remove the transmission cover floor panel, the answer is no. However, you would want to remove the front seat cushion(s) for a little more working room (and if for no other reason than to spare them from oil stains).
The tricky thing is in getting that floor panel out around the gearshift lever. As I recall, you would put the transmission into 1st or 3rd, then raise the rear portion of the transmission cover first. The front should clear the heater and radio speaker (if you have them). At least mine cleared. If the gearshift lever gives you too much trouble, simply raise the transmission cover enough to get under it, and unbolt the plate off the top of the transmission (4 bolts), then lift the gearshift lever and floor out together.0 -
Hi, I also have one of these, and Jon B (posted above) is correct. As I recall, you don't have to actually remove the entire seat, although doing so would keep it from getting oil, etc. on it. If necessary, it unbolts pretty easily. Like Jon, I always unbolt the floor pan, then lift it up far enough to take the transmission cover plate off. Otherwise, the floor pan won't clear the #$%^#^&*) Gearshift. It's just easier to know this in advance. And I thought I was the only person that ever had a problem with this. I suggest as soon as the trans cover is off, cover the open trans with something so you don't accidentally (like I did) dump dirt from the bottom of the floor pan into the open trans while removing it.

hi thanks fellow hudson nuts. lol. how does front cushion come out? pull out from back and lift as in modern car back seats ? or lift from seat front and lift.? there is no springs and/or anything that will pop up when i loosen 4 bolts holding shifter? i have a spare tranny w/cracked bell housing where the rods travel up and down. so i made a plate to bolt onto shifter hole to keep crud out. again thanks. dermot.0

My '37 front seat cushions are a bit non-standard, but I'll take a guess: push back on the front seat cushion, then raise front to disengage, and then pull forward and out. This action might be facilitated by tipping both the front seatback halves forward, if your car has a split seatback.
However, in a split seatback situation, tipping the passenger's side seatback forward will cause the ENTIRE seat to pivot from the driver's side, but the driver's seatback may not be able to swing forward at the same time as the passenger's. To disengage this pivot feature -- so that you can tip BOTH seatbacks slightly forward -- reach under the back of the passenger's seat back, toward the center, find the linkage rod to the seat pivot, and slide it out of the hole in the seatback bracket. This may involve removing a cotter pin holding the linkage to the bracket.0 -
thank you i am going for a look right now. dermot.0

Jon / Dermott - my 37 coupe has no cotter pin for the seat linkage. the only way to remove the linkage is to remove one of the two seat sliders. Each seat bracket (slider) is held on by two bolts, one in the front and one in the back. You first have to slide the seat all the way back which gives you room to get to the front bolt and then slide it all the way forward which will give you room to get to the back bolt. It's easier if you loosen both before you remove either one as the bolt cap hits the top to the track slider - when the're lose you can lift the whole slider unit allowing you to finish unthreating the bolts. DO NOT REMOVE THE TWO BOLTS HOLDING THE TOP OF THE SLIDER MECHANISM INTO THE BOTTOM. if you do then you must allign the left to the right and have the two toothed wheel separating the top and bottom halves AND allign the linkage rod at the same time. So just don't remove the two bolt you'll first see. remove the two at the ends in between the top and bottom halves. also once removed do not slide the top in the slider- just put it back like it is and the linkage rod will line right up.0
