Some Questions about wiring.

Well things are moving on the Hudson, I decided I would start to tackle the wiring. It is the orginal 6 volt system and everything seems to be there. I managed to get my headlights to work aswell as the high beams. I just chased the original wiring and replaced what was bad, mostly at the terminals on the front of the car, near the rad support. The problem I am having is with the turn signals and parking lights. I cant seem to get them working, It looks like the car has one of those possibly aftermarket turnsignal box on the steering column with the little rubber wheel inside. I do have power going to it since the little red light come on when I turn the handle left and right but my lights arnt working only the test light when I put it in the socket. When I put a light tester in the socket of the bulb it does respond with the switch but no blinking its almost like the indicator acts as the parking light switches. Also the car uses 1158 bulbs anybody know if a tractor supply place would carry these bulbs and even the sockets?

I dont have any diagrams to go off of so I have searched the net and found this wiring diagram I think from a 47 to 49 ford? not sure though? It does show the wiring for a parking light but nothing for turn signal. Is this diagram even worth looking at? I need some real expert advice on this one guys. Also My brake lights arnt working either but I haven't really got there yet my guess it could be the switch on the master? Car is a 1952 Hudson Wasp. If anyone can scan a wiring schematic or know a great sight that can steer me in the right direction

Brent, have you considered buying the appropriate shop manual for your car? I think it would contain a wiring diagram, and probably a great deal of other information you need, as well. Assuming you're in the H-E-T Club, you can buy a reprint from the Club Store, or you might find an original on Ebay as well. Or at one of the antique auto literature websites like www.autolit.com .

As to the turnsignals, have you tried a replacement blinker?

I usually find my light bulbs at local antique car show flea markets, and at very reasonable prices.
  • How do you join the HET club? is it a on-line news letter or doest it get sent out? I live in Canada so would mailing be an issue? As for a shop manual it would be a great idea, do they have wiring schematics? Where would you find the blinker? is that a part of the indcator box on the steering column? or is the flasher some where under the dash?

Our local NAPA store carries 6V bulbs (made in Mexico). Don't know if NAPA would be avail to you in Canada. Wired mine from scratch using Hudson original. Bit odd, but they used separate wires from the signal switch to connection for corresponding front and back sides,. Suspect most after market switches only used one wire, which was then split to front and rear. If the telltale light is built into the switch and working that will reduce the job. Remember, on '51 and before(maybe later), Hudson used a separate bulb for the rear signals. Tail lights and stop signals were on one dual element bulb. The turn signal on another, which required its own bulb and holder.

You will need a 6V flasher too. Believe Dave Kostansek sells them. I may also have one left over as I've converted to 12 V. If I do, it's free. You might consider latter. If you stay with 6V be sure to use heavy enough wire, especially on the headlights.

  • Yes you can get it mailed to Canada. Only thing is you have to wait. I still have not received my WTN May-June issue. I had second class mail upgraded to 1st class made no difference still takes a month. I get another magazine from another car club in the States it takes a week to get that. Have no idea why the WTN takes a month. First class should take a week. I have the sneaking feeling that its delivered to the border by bicycle.

I would recommend checking out this site: http://www.danielsternlighting.com/tech/tech.html

I contacted them and they have suggestions for 6V relays and also have 6V halogen head lights. I plan on doing this at some point, I think for a 6V system it would be an excellent idea.

You need a good ground on them parkin lights or they won't blink the blinker. The watchword on wiring is 'Bright n'Tight'
  • Thanks Alex, Email sent. Here is diagram that I got elsewhere on the net. It does show a similar set-up as mine. I couldnt locate a flasher under the steering column where all the wires go into the indicator box however there are a couple of wires that look to be disconnected from something, possibly this is where the flasher was located. Im thinking that aprevious owner may have caught it when he went to sit in the car or got out and tore it free from the wires? Anyways here is the picture not sure once again if it would work for a six volt system or what P and L stand for but here it goes.....

By the way guys thanks for all your insight and help

The WTN is high on postal employees "must read" list!!!! Especially in Canada. LOL ROF

  • Still don't have my WTN either. Good thing I don't rely on it for hot bargains..lol
  • Alex,

now that you mention it I always wondered why the WTN comes to my house opened and with lots of the ads circled in pen. And the ketchup stains I always wondered about those as well. No wonder the post carrier always says thank you when they deliver it.....hey...now what a cotton pickin moment here.....LOL

Gives hope for the postal system - now we know some of them, at least, CAN read. LOL

To be honest about it tho, I have a theory about mis-delivered mail. It's part of a post office program called "Meet Your Neighbors!!"

  • Hey 51 got my WTN on friday did you get yours?
  • Nope not yet hopefully today. You are closer than I am to the source LOL. A month to get a mag up to here. If it didn't piss me off I would laugh. I know it has nothing to do with the WTN staff but something is happening here. My other mag comes from Florida takes 7 days tops. Never had it late in the 5 years I have been getting it.

I may have missed this...did anyone post the Hudson club homepage? Brent, you can find out more about the Club and newsletter here. There is also a place where you can download a membership blank. http://www.hudsonclub.org/
