Western Regional Meet

The meet ends today. I went yesterday. I was the 62nd car to arrive there so I'd say there were approx 80 or so cars? Most of us caravaned to California Motor Speedway and we got to do three laps on the actual track (behind a pace car). I didn't think that it was going to be any big deal event but it was great driving a Hudson on an actual Nascar track. It gives an incredible perspective when actually driving on it and hitting the banks (only 60 miles per hour was allowed).

There was an original Italia at the meet. Number 25 out of 25. An unrestored original car. Owned by Bob Roth I think his name was. They were a nicely engineered car. First Italia I have seen in person and I was impressed. Lots of great Hudsons of all years in attendance. I just missed buying a mint visor by 30 seconds. I walked up and the guy was handing the seller a check. Such is life...

  • Just finished IM Chat with Bryan Wold who is at the Western Regionals. He also had the opportunity to take CHUBBY on the track and was thrilled. He said that over 30 DOCs were present at the EDWARDS theater for the showing of CARS. Each had a pair of DOC EYES in the front windows and the theater provided security for the cars while the owners enjoyed the movie on a pass.
  • That's where you drop waaaay back in the line and romp on it ti catch up. Sixty around the track is cool, but boring.

I know your kidding but they warned us about doing that and then getting kicked off the track. We also had to sign a liability waiver. They were very strict and rightly so. I can just imagine what could happen if some yahoo went crazy and crashed.

doing stuff like this is what ruins it for the rest of the folks.

Not to say that the thought didn't cross my mind as well though....

Kind of like the national meet back in the early 80's in Georgia where they were allowed to race a couple of laps around an old dirt track. I know if me and hudsondad were there, we would have likely exchanged some paint....

Well I just happened to be that guy, but it was by accident. I ended up at the back on the track event because I wanted to follow Ivan's car and take pictures. When we came between laps to trade driving positions or take photos, as i got up toward the front of the line up they started taking off again. Well I wasn't ready for that so I sprinted back to my car and had to play catch up (bummer!) One guy was coming out of the parking area onto the track with a 4 door Hornet and it was just like when you see them merging out of the pits on a real race. I had a chance to beat him so I punched it and hit the track being about a half a mile or so behind the group by then. The two of us had a little fun catching up and were talking about it when we pulled back in. Never saw him again the rest of the meet, but sure had fun for that short time.

If we want younger members to attend the banquet next year, rather than a Dixieland band, next year we should get Steppenwolf or perhaps Deep Purple, hec even Rodney and the Daytonas... LOL

How "young" are you talkin? I think you should have just fired up Ivan's hornet and let it "sing" all night. Nothing sweeter.

There were a couple of us with cars around the 40 mark and I believe we were the youngest at least that owned one. There were kids, grandkids and spectators who would have never heard of Steppenwolf or Deep Purple. They would have considered them and anyone familiar with them old. No matter what age you are, there is always those older and those younger.

A 50's rock n roll band would fit in quite nicely. An era that young and old can relate to. Maybe next year when the masses of new Doc Hudson owners arrive. LOL

Good point, I did forget. I'd take the Dixie over the barbershop quartet!

I was one of the Yahooo's, I didn't go toooo crazy, nor crash. The first lap was great, doing around 40, came back into the pit area, than back out doing around 40 - 50, my friend in a '29 Hudson with a corvette motor slowed us down on this lap, came back into the pit area, than the '29 didn't didn't start off with the group, so we passed him in the pit area and had to do "Catch Up" , wow! what fun. I went high up into the curve, coming back down a '36 Terraplane was passing me on the inside lane, I put the pedal to the metal and I seen the '36 in my rear view mirror.
