HAVE53 WITH 308, TWIN H, AND HTDRAMATIC. MY PROBLEM STARTED OUT BY BEING HARD KEEPING IT RUNNING WHEN I FIRST START. WHEN IT WARMED UP, IT WAS OK. THEN LAST SUNDAY I TRIED TO START AND I COULDN'T KEEP IT RUNNING AT ALL. I DISCONNECTED THE GAS LINE FROM CARBS. AND NO GAS WOULD COME OUT WHEN I CRANKED IT OVER. I FIGURED IT WAS THE FUEL PUMP, ORDERED ONE FROM DAVE K. IT CAME AND PUT IN ON AND SAME THING, NO GAS COMES OUT. HAVE FULL TANK OF GAS, DISCONNECTED FUEL LINE FROM GAS TANK, GAS COMES OUT AND NOT PLUGGED. DISCONNECTED THE GAS LINE GOING INTO PUMP, AND GAS COMES OUT THERE. SPRAYED STARTER FLUID INTO CARBS. AND IT STARTS FOR A FEW SECONDS. MY LIMTED KNOWLEDGE IF BAFFELED. ANY SUGGESTIONS.

You may be sucking air at one of the rubber fuel hoses that join the metal lines. Replace them all from the tank forward and try again. You can test your fuel pump by taking a long rubber fuel hose and put one end in a gas can and connect the other end to the fuel pump and try to start it.This will eliminate problems from the pump to the engine if it runs this way.

  • There are a number of things that could cause your problem.

It could be that that rubber portions of the lines are collapsing. This is not always evident, as the inner surface can separate from the outer cover and everything looks normal, and when the suction from the pump is removed, it relaxes and lets gas through.

Might be loose connections, allowing the pump to pull air.

Also check the solder seal around the pick up tube, where it goes into the tank. The solder from the factory was thin and sometime cracks, Especially if the tank has been removed, or just removing the line can cause the crack. This will cause a leak.

Check the gasket pack on the fuel pump, It may be that the pump is not spaced correctly and is not getting enough travel. Did the old pump have a stack of gaskets on it and did you replace them? If not the pump arm may not be engaging the eccentric fully or could be overriding it. Out of these choices I would check the pump spacing first.
