Are there any significant differences between starters used on the various years of manual transmission stepdowns? I realize the hydro starter is different, but are there diff's between an early (48-49) manual transmission starter, and a later (51 or newer) manual transmission starter?

Thanks as always.

The 254, 262, and 308 starters are interchangeable, as far as I know, but I'm not sure about the 232.

  • Geoff, The 202 (Jet) and the Pacemaker(232) will interchange. Both were smaller starters. The difference on some early stepdown manual starters as compared to later ones is that they put the starter solenoid on the dust shield after removing it from the starter in 1951. They will interchange .
  • 50 And Older Stick Starters Had The Solinoid Mounted On Topof The Starter, In 51 And Later The Starter Solinoid Was Mounted On The Drivers Side Inner Panel. They Will All Enterchange With Wireing Adjustments, However The Hornet Had Higher Torque Rateing, Bill Albright
