4=6 ?
An old friend of mine that collects Hudsons once wore a Hudson T-shirt that, I think, said 4=6. He told me the story behind it, but it has been so long, I've forgotten it. With the Cars movie, my kids are asking me all kinds of Hudson questions. Anyone know the story behind the 4=6 - and any chance anyone is making these t-shirts still?
thanks
thanks

It was actually 6=8, and was I believe originally a Clifford performance T-shirt slogan, indicating that the Hudson 6 cylinder performance was equal to any V8.

Actually, the Clifford 6=8 was for all different sixes and eights. He said that he could build any six to perform as good as a V8. It wasn't just a Hudson thing.

thanks guys - I did find cliffordperformance.net and they still use the 6=8 logo. Guessing it is trademarked - I've emailed them about that old t-shirt - I'm certain it had the Hudson logo on it. Guessing it isn't available anymore, so now I'm wondering about ownership of the Hudson logo and what it would take to get permission to make a few of those shirts myself (I've got a silkscreening setup here).0

Humorous Note; Jack Was Alwa Little Upset With Me Because I Had The California Personalized Lic Plate On My 53 Coupe 6equal8 And He Had To Settle For 6equl8. Which He Ran On His Mercedes. Still Lol Bill Albright0

Andrew, Daimler-Chrysler owns the rights to the Hudson name and all of the models (Wasp, Hornet, etc). D-C has a history of being very aggressive against those people using any trademark owned by them (as does Ford, GM, and Toyota, among others) and not hesitating to bring their legal machine down upon those not blessed with permission to use said trademarks. Contact D-C directly in Detroit and find out what you need to do.0

If you're planning on selling these shirts, I would first contact a lawyer who specializes in trademark and copyright laws. Contacting DCX will likely result in a very loud "NO!". They may just own the rights to the name "Hudson" and all models, but they may have let the rights to the logos lapse.0 -
It is my understanding that as long as you don't make an exact copy of an item, you can get away with it. For example, I do know of a situation with a supplier of seat covers and upholstery for Chrysler cars. DC sent their lawyers in - the supplier told them to go away. Chrysler stitched their material with, I'll say, 16 threads per inch and this supplier was using 14 tpi. Something like that - you get the idea.
I scan manuals and such - are they the same as originals. Of course not. So I'm probably safe. Tho if DC made a big issue of it, I would have to stop, because I couldn't fight them off.

I'm just tellin you from personal experience, before you start thinking of making or copying something for shirts, whatever, you'd better have your T's crossed and I's dotted. Come back with "what-if's" all you want, but just remember, you can't say you weren't warned. And, yes, Hornet and 46, that includes logos, not just the names.
Ask anyone who's tried taking the H-D logo and making unlicensed shirts, etc. GM, D-C, and Ford are just the same, and rightfully so.0 -
The sad thing about it all is this; we care about the cars. When it comes down to it, all they care about is "Cars". We will never see any T-shirts, mugs, or keychains from DCX like they do with the 'Cuda, Challenger, and HEMI nameplates. The only stuff we'll see about Hudson will be a blue '51 with eyes on it, and that will get old real quick.
Not to worry though, when the revolution comes we will make all the T-shirts we want!
Is the club store merchandise "used with permission"?0 -

I used to have a client in No. Cal. with a custom motorcycle shop who tried to use H-D in his shop name.....didn't take the Corporate boys but about 30 days to find out about it and had an injunction against his using the initials! Apparently they own every potential combination of those two letters if you have anything remotely connected to motorcycles.

Clinton had excellent looking black t-shirts forsale at the Western Meet. They had a caricature of a Hornet carrying a twin -h set up. It also mentioned Hudson winning more races than any other manufactuer or some such. It's the best looking Hudson shirt I've seen. Excellent graphics. They were out of my size and he sold out of them. I can ask Clinton to post a picture here on the forum.
If you still want to make them, I would just use good sense. As a Hudson club member, I doubt anyone will come after you. Very bad PR to go after a Hudson club member. If they do, so what. You stop making them and by that time they are all distributed anyway. Clifford would be foolish to contest using 6=8. It would not be in their best interest in selling to Hudsonites. You could even use a close variant like maybe 6 cyl equals 8 cyl, or 6 beats an 8, etc, etc.0
