Generator Polarization

Please help...what is the proper way to polarize a 1936 Terraplane generator? I have been on the web, and there are numerous descriptions, all depending upon the manufacturer of the electrical components, so I want to do it the right way for a Hudson. Thanks in advance.

Just momentarily connect the "Arm" terminal on the generator or regulator to the "Batt" terminal on the regulator or starter motor.

by the say that wont work unless you have the KEY ON BILL ALBRIGHT0

Sorry to disagree, but it doesn't make any difference if the key is on or off. The key provides voltage for the ignition, not the generator. There were two systems used in '36, depending on the model being Deluxe or Custom, but connecting the A terminal on the generator to battery voltage will do the job of polarising on both models. And they should of course be positive ground.

Geoff, in any case they'll be positive ground after you polarize them! LOL. And one more note ... I seem to recall from my days teaching DC systems for aircraft, that it's best to have the generator running when you "flash" it. Anyone else read or hear that anyplace?0

Right Park And If Its Running , The Key Is On0

What I meant was that it should be checked that the battery is connected positive to ground. And if you are in doubt as to the generator polarity, it is not prudent to try and run it first, as you will be trying to get the irresistable force to move the immovable object! It only takes a millisecond to re-polarise the fields, so you can't do any damage.
