Too much money and overvalued in my book. All visors have to be prepped and painted anyway.

They could have got this one for $256.26. Not NOS, but it came with a free car attached!

Agreed, cost of car with visor reasonable, however car hauler probably would charge $800.- delivery fees to Las Vegas for grand total of $1,056.25 ...I don't think 49 visor (otherwise I would have purchased Dave S. visor) will fit '52 or '53 Hornet and like all used/NOS visor's purchased requires prep and paint work. After checking recent issues of White Triangle News where members are selling used visor's for over $400.- the $500.- I paid I feel is probably good value for NOS visor.

On my last '53 Hornet purchased from Rudy Bennett, we drove 16 hours from Il Paso to Las Vegas at 70 plus MPH, car didn't have sun visor. However I purchased and installed visor and drove car again at plus 70 MPH without visor ripping off...Only my personal thoughts about visor, Hudson's with one, look better that Hudson's without one? I now have two visor's, one used and one NOS will probably will offer used one for sale at later date?

Paul, I was only quoting what some have said on these forums. I personally don't have experience with them, but apparently some have. And here in Arizona 75mph is the highway speed limit, so they'd have to hold up to much faster speeds. People here cruise the freeways at 80-90mph regularly. Would they hold up to 100-110mph? Some have said the one-piece types are stronger.

I agree they look cool, but won't buy one if they come apart at 100-110mph. Its not the $500 (thats not a big deal), its that I wouldn't pay that for something that may come apart at high speeds, let alone what flying debris may do to someone else's car! There goes the insurance rates!

Jay, doesn't that car of yours have a visor?

(maybe you need to send it to me....)

    Anyway,

Visor were never engineered to be held on a car going 100+ MPH for any period of time. I think that 70-80 would be no problem, but my concern would be however you modify it, whatever you do with it, having a heavy mass of metal, such as a hudson moving at 100+ MPH is difficult to stop, regardless of brakes, etc.... a visor blowing off of the car would be the least of my concerns.

Not only wasn't the visor designed to meet with those speeds, but the vehicle itself, was not designed to maintain those types of speeds. While I dream of that 100 MPH mark, if I ever get there, (with the help of OD) it would be likely without a visor. I think they make 48-51 4 doors look strange. Convertibles and coupes, they're okay. 52-53 4 doors, okay. I don't know, just my opinion.

Oh yeah, for the price of the NOS one on eBay, well, it might be a bit high, in my mind, but remember, someone was under bidder, and consider the fact, is it really a premium to pay, to deal with a no problem item? no rust, no paint buildup, perfect, ready for prep and paint, in every respect? 500 isn't too far off. OSmetimes the extra ~100 bucks is a major time saver down the road.

Prices are going up, get the parts while you can!

Geez, one more... the mirrors are beauties, get a pair, you'll love them!
  • My car never had a visor. Actually, hudsonkid, my Vette buddy says the Pacemaker has about the same curb weight as a Vette (I gave him the specs on weight). With new suspension in the front and back, tires, etc. I'm not worried about speed. And I won't drive it like a road racer, doesn't seem to be designed for that. Of course, I won't always be driving that fast, but on a long strip of open highway..........can't resist!

Like Paul stated, if the visor is mounted correctly, it will stay on and give you no problems. Along this line of thinking, it is common sense regular maintenance to tighten the fasteners up now and then (once a year?), because the constant strain on these parts will tend to loosen them up after a while. It's really no different than any other component on the car in that regard.
  • My personal opinion is that visors look awful on coupes and convertibles. If you want to accessorize with visors, door guards, vent shades, fog lights and bumper guards, venetian blinds, swamp coolers, put them on a sedan. $500 for a real NOS visor in todays market is pretty fair as I've seen used ones offered for $400 that needed work (bent or wrinkled) I wouldn't want a visor on mine at 100mph!!!!
  • I believe there are still visors out there to be found for alot less than what is being offered thru us Hudsonites here. These aren't in Twin-H scarcity levels. I think the color of a car and the tires (ie: wide white walls) has alot to do with the looks of a visor. One thing for sure is that visors are classic accessories and a charming thing of a past era.

    c'mon hudsondad....

you could put a visor on your wasp.

who are we kidding, not only isn't it going 100mph anytime soon, heck you wouldn't have to worry about the paint ever fading, either.... :p

is that thing going to come out this weekend?

    or ever?

maybe we can take a trip over to manheim, and get some shots of it with the hudson sign....
  • I'm getting it out this weekend, maybe take it to the picnic on the 4th. If it isn't raining. I do have a real nice visor (somewhere) off a 52 hornet but it's not going on the wasp coupe. I think they look best on dark colored 52-3 sedans.

    Jay,

Holy Moly, if you're driving at 25-35 over the posted speed limit, you might have bigger problems than a loose visor! LOL

I've cruised many of the freeways in several 75mph states, and haven't had a problem with the visor. But then, I'm one of those rare birds that....GASP (drives the speed limit!)
  • I'll wait to pick up an original visor rather than a repro. The Hudson visors have a great shape and quality.

Well, here, if you go the speed limit (other than rush hour) you get run over! When they finished the Loop 101 (here in the Phoenix Metro Valley), they clocked the average speed of motorists at 85mph (the speed limit is 65mph)!

In the West we love our cars and we love to drive fast! (But most of us are safe about it)

My dad's '49 has a sunvisor on it with no problems. Trust me- the only one that I know of that drives faster than him in a Hudson is H. Bennett. I am sure that just about everyone in the Western Reserve will attest to his driving. He got picked up a few years ago on his way to a Hudson meet in Pittsburgh doing 80+ MPH. I don't think he was too worried about the visor flying off! Thanks to speedometer calibrations, it wasn't so hateful for him...Then there was the time the Pittsburgh bunch passed him as he sat along side the road getting a ticket in NY.....Or maybe the time when we got pulled over in Va.....or the one on the way to Colorado Springs......needless to say, he doesn't get passed too much!
  • I received my NOS visor today; to me, it's the best $530.- I spent so far on my Hornet restoration, needless to say after opening well packed parcel I wasn't disappointed...
