308 with number on the top left hand side
OK,
Need a little help here. I just saw a 308 engine with the serial number stamped on a boss on the top left hand front of the engine. It was in a 51 but I know it isn't the original production. Number was 5320857. This a American Mtrs number? Perhaps a factory replacement? Thanks,Dave W.

Dave, Likely it was an AMC production number. They took a lot of Hudson numbers when they took over they added a "5" prefix to a lot of numbers. Most of the heads made when it was still Hudson began with "30" as in 309120. The 48-54 Master Parts Catalog dosen't show your number.0

The motor or serial # was moved to the left side top of block on the 55/56 AMC 308s0

The 1955 Parts manual lists the engine part numbers starting at F-8601 and the 1955 Maintenance manual calls out changes in the way engines were marked after engine F2814. Obviously there is a discrepancy between the books. The point is the engine part numbers of installed engines is F-XXXX. 532 XXXX is a American Motors part number for instance a cast iron 1955 Hornet Flat Head 6 Cylinder head part number is: 532 5080, and the aluminum varient is: 532 5081. The only 532 XXXX part number using the numbers you posted was 532 5087 - the part number for a Hornet 6 waterpump.
The 55 manual does not list all the part numbers so you can scan for the precise one you are looking for ... the only way with my books is one by one... quite tedious.

Ken,
It wasn't a part or casting number, it was the stamped in engine number. Not cast in. Since I never owned a post 54, I was surprised to see the number on the left front. I would like to know if it's a 55 or 56 and might it have hydraulics? I sold or gave away all my post 54 manuals years ago. I should know better than to get rid of any Hudson reference books.Ya live and learn huh?
Thanks, Dave0
