Rear Emblem Paint

On a 1940 Traveler, does anyone know if the letters "Hudson" that are on the rear tag holder/light assembly are painted in? On my car, the letters are chrome, like the rest of the unit, making the name virtually unreadable from any distance. Thanks, Paul.
