Robert, you probably have a Club Coupe ... there were no Hornet 2-door sedans in '51. I hope it's a rust bucket that's not a good candidate for a "normal" restoration. If you're determined to cut it up, how about sectioning it below the belt line ... the top already looks chopped!

Absolute words of wisdom Park W!

If the top absolutely must be chopped I would opt for a simple reverse pie cut and only take about 2-1/2 from the front maybe an 1" in the back - that way you don't have to lay the back window out so flat. This would be a subtle yet functional chop to a stepdown.

There are ton's of web sites and books available online, I'd inverst some time a little money and do some research before attempting the cuts - you may find that its more than you want or can afford to tackle

I agree with Park on sectioning below the belt line - especially if its chopped. A lot of times a chop without a body-sectioning will make the body look too bulky IMHO

HI, I HAVE BEEN TOLD I HAVE A LONG WHEEL BASE MODEL? I THINK IT MAYBE A 50 HORNET MYSELF. THE TAIL LIGHTS DONOT LOOK LIKE 51?

IF I CAN FIND OUT HOW TO PUT A PHOTO ON I WILL... BY THE WAY IT IS 95% RUST FREE, LH DRIVE AND RUNS & DRIVES TO BOOT!!!

DONT KNOW IF I SHOULD JUST DO MILD CUSTOM AND LEAVE ROOF ALONE..

MAYBE DO THAT AND SEE WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE!

    THANKS AGAIN ROBERT

Rob, I've tried emailing you but the messages are bouncing.

If you are somewhere near Hobart, I'm down there from Brisbane next weekend, 8th to 12th July and will be able to let you know what you have there.

Is your 2 door Hudson a recent arrival in Australia?

    regards

  • Hi Guys,

Have Found Out I Have A 51 Two Door Lwb Brougham Sedan.

How Rare Are These Cars In The Usa?? Should I Keep Vehicle Stock On The Outside And Update Running Gear? Or Just Restore Car To It Younger Day's? Or Custom It As I Was Thinking? Dont Want To Destroy A Car Not Knowing Its True Value...

    Look Forward To Your Advise!!!:)

    Thanks Robert-australia
  • I would suggest you keep it as stock as possible. Since your car already looks better than most rods in its stock form, a chop and section is not required for a sleek low look; that comes standard with the Hudson.

If your car is a solid driver, I'd suggest you keep it that way. Your car is a factory "hot rod." Keep it all Hudson and go with the twin H, headers, high compression head ETC. Plenty of folks here can help you in this direction.

    :D My 2 cents worth

    Have a nice day

Look Forward To Your Advise!!!:) Rob, First of all this is your car and you can do with it what you want simply put. As far as rarity goes, this is a model that was not very large in terms of production. The two door brougham was made for only the Super and Pacemaker line of Hudsons for that year. Commodore and Hornet lines did not offer them . I'm not sure of the reasoning ,they just weren't offered. In fact the Hornet didn't offer a 2 door brougham until their last year of independence in 1954. So your car is not very common. The sheetmetal rear quarters and doors interchange with coupes and the roof and trunklid interchange with the sedans. The unique parts for the broughams were the rear side windows and trim.Good luck in whatever you choose. One final word. A street rod can be done anyway you want and it's correct. Putting the car back to origional is a very narrow and tough path.

This is one of the three old controversial questions: discussing Religion, Politics and Rodding an old classic. Not too many of these in the USA and even less in Australia. Who wants a modified rare car? Obviously, its your car and can do what you want with it but just because someone owns a car doesn't mean they do the "right" thing. If it is a real two door Hornet, solid and complete running car, it is currently more valuable as stock. It would be relatively easy to restore. If it were rusted and missing major components then save it by modifying it. Whatever makes you happy but your wallet will be happier by bringing it back to stock as an enjoyed investment.
  • Hi Guy's,

Have Made My Mine Up To Leave Body And Running Gear As Hudson Supplied Car. I Have A 1951 Two Door Supper Brougham Sedan.

I Am Changing The Grill And Giving The Car A Special Paint Job.

I Need Some Help In Finding Some Rear Wind Trim, As My Hudson Is Missing It? Would Love To Add A Photo For You Guys To See... But Dont Know How? Maybe You Can Tell Me Or Give Me A Email Address To Send It To. Were You Could Do It For Me?

    Thanks To All.robert:) :)
  • Over the past six months or so there have been a couple pictures of chopped 2 door sedans that showed up on this forum. Someone may have saved pictures, and they were pretty wild looking. I think one of the cars was also sectioned. It would give you some idea what they look like modified.

I think you're doing the right thing (by only slightly modifying it) because it's a pretty rare car in Australia. Supposed you did a radical custom job on it. People have no idea what the original was supposed to look like anyway, therefore would have no appreciation for all your work! You might just as well have left it 'stock', and they'd assume THAT was a custom!

Regarding the posting of photos, may I suggest that you go to the Hudson Photo Album site, register there, and then start your own album? No charge, and you get to post a fair number of photos grouped together. (Keep them fairly low resolution, more like 100 dpi, and you can post more than if they were high-rez.) The site is at http://groups.msn.com/HudsonEssexTerraplaneBulletinBoard/_whatsnew.msnw , choose the PICTURES link at left.

Once you've uploaded them to the internet, you can right-click on any of them, then choose PROPERTIES from the dialog box that pops up, and copy / paste the URL (or address of the photo) to your message here. (choose the little yellow box in the posting form, and insert your URL in the window that opens up). The photo ought to appear next to your message, then.
  • KEEP IT STOCK, MY OPINION bill albright so calif

Rob, trim for your rear window is same as 51 sedan, should not be too hard to find. Other years won't fit apart from 50 LWB sedans. Try Steve Conyers at Cranbourne.

  • Hi Bob,

Would You Have A Contact Number For Steve Conyers?

    Thanks Robert

Rob; Check out the thread titled "Remember this one?" in the street rod section at the top of this forum page. Altough I love the lines on that chopped brougham, I personally agree that your car should be left stock. There just aren't many '51 Super 6 Broughams left, even on this side of the pond... let alone a rare right hand drive model. It's my understanding that nearly all the Hudsons shipped down under were "saloons" (4drs). If you want a bit more power, you could swap in a 308 (Hornet) engine and hide it under your existing 262 cylinder head.

I BOUGHT THE CAR IN NORTH DAKOTA FOR A $1000US ABOUT 5 YEARS AGO. IT HAS BEEN SITTING, WAITING FOR ME TO DO SOMETHING WITH IT. HAVE RESTORED 5 CARS PRIOR. NOW IT TIME TO GET IT UP TO A DRIVER LEVEL.

HAS NOT NEEDED TO MUCH SO FAR. HAD THREE BITS OF RUST. TWO IN THE LOWER MUDGAURDS WREE THE DIRT GETS STUCK. AND A LITTLE 3" X 2" PIECE WERE THE REAR FENDER GUARGS SLIPS UP INTO. I WILL DRIVE IT AND SEE WHAT I THINK OF THE POWER AND RIDE OF MY HUDSON.

    THANKS TO ALL. ROBERT:D

  • rob you have the starting point that most of us would kill for! me especially!

right now im working on taking my 51 pacemaker sedan back to hudson power, but with a few period speed items and tricks to get it rolling a bit harder. search around for the speed threads on here and make up your mind from there. but h3ll yeh on your score.
  • Hey Rob----the low hudson roofline is what caused 20,000 mercurys and lincolns to get chop jobs---bob
  •

HI, CAN SOMEBODY TELL ME HOW MANY 1951 TWO DOOR SEDANS WERE EVER MADE???
  • Jon B

Rob, when Hudson merged with Nash in 1954, most of the company records were dumped. My understanding is that, with a few exceptions, body style breakdowns in production numbers, just aren't available. You might get some idea of how many still exist, possibly, by contacting the fellow who keeps the registry of 1951 Hudsons. That would be Charlie Woodruff (his contact information is in the back of each WTN, along with other registrars). I don't know if Charlie breaks his data down by body style but you could give it a try.
  • Hi Guys

Have Posted More Photo's In The Photo Forum, Can Somebody Post Them Here??

  • Wow!!! That Was Quick. Thanks Guys.
  • Hi Guy's

Can Somebody Put Some Of My Photo's In The Hudson Streetrod Section Please?

Maybe You Could Have A Look At The Trim Job I Did. It Is My First Go At Triming A Car. I Think It Turned Out O/k!!

    Thanks Robert-australia:)
