Movie "Cars"- $182.1 Million So Far

No surprises here, "Cars" is now officially one of the top producing movies of the year and no other movie will come close to the enormous mechandising revenues. Pretty amazing for a small independent like Hudson to be a main character in a movie this big and also have had a featured role in another major movie, "Driving Miss Daisy".

The merchandising is incredible. Everything "Cars" related is always sold out at our local Target. I have a feeling Mattel didn't have the "vision" that collectors would be after these toys to the extent that they have been.

I was at WalMart the other day and they had nothing but a few odds and ends like a puzzle and board game or something. Nothing with Doc. Now my friends and family have been collecting anything Hudson they can find, mostly Doc knic knacs. I have a pen, talking car, hat pin, couple of wind up cars, a spring loaded car. and my prize posession is my all metal model my Dad got me. Its a 53 as he could not find a 54 but the doors open, trunk, hood, has Twin H, full suspension and even a mini sales brochure in the truck that looks just like a 50's Hudson brochure. Way cool!
  • I Have A Hard Time Finding The Doc Hudson Toys, Have Some Of Them. But I Was Talking To One Of The Store Managers, And He Said They Get Alot More Of The Other Cars Then They Do Doc Hudson.

I spoke with a manager in Toys R Us the other day and asked why there wasn't much "Doc" stuff. They said that "Mater" and "Lightning" were the most popular characters with storegoers, which is why they have a ton of toys featuring those characters. He said maybe they (Disney or whoever) will come out with some more toys featuring "Doc" if there is a big enough demand.

So I try to buy anything Doc I can find. Was hoping for a Doc T-Shirt for my boy, but had to settle for a "Lightning" shirt.

It will be interesting to see how merchandising stands against movies like Star Wars, though I realize Star Wars has many movies to its credit over a much longer period of time (and a wider audience). If "Cars" has no sequel, I think it will die when the next big kids movie comes out nearer the fall or winter.

Here's a list of offical Cars stuff I found on the net:

Maybe not everything, and not as many Doc things as I would have thought, but Doc is not the main character anyway. Interesting how much money it looks like Disney and sponsors are putting into this marketing......BIG BUCKS! I read somewhere that Pixar's production budget for this movie was around $120mil, so they are definately in the black!

Hope they ride it as long as they can.

    Jay,
I ordered a "Doc" T-Shirt from www.disneyshopping.com for my little girl. They even allow you to personalize it.
Anything for the kids...as long as it's Hudson related!

Just as with Toy Story and Shrek, there will be a sequel in a year or so. It is a mega hit movie and much of the production costs and computer development is already done from the first movie. It's a no brainer to release a second one. The continued plot and list of characters are endless. A movie of this popularity won't fade away and the level of mechandising too profitable.

The nice thing about Doc is that he is a real car. Lightning is not and Mater is unidentified. Gearheads and kids see Hudsons as real when we drive them. They won't see Lightning Mcqueen. Hudson has been immortalized by film and by toy cars, video games, lunch pails, etc. Kids don't forget these things, they remember them.

I just saw the battery-powered slot car set featuring Doc and Lightning last week. Cool.
  • Have you seen the sipper caps on the BELLY WASHER juice drinks at Wal-Mart? I got 3 of them and now they are gone....

Wait 'til "Cars" comes out on DVD ... they're going to be amazed at how the first 3,000 copies disappear off the shelves in a heartbeat!

    Park,
