Track/width
Can anyone tell me the width from outside of tire to the outside of the tire on the other side (I think that's called the track) for a 1951 Hudson Hornet sedan? I need to tow a 1951 Hudson Hornet that I just bought and need to make sure it will fit on the trailer.
Thanks!

The over all width of the car is 77.601 in. Dont know about from tire to tire. Your best bet might just be getting out the measuring tape.0

I would, however, the car is located about 5 hours away right now. I'm trying to arrange a trailer to go and get it, but trying to make sure that it will fit on the trailer before I get down there and find out it wont. the trailer that I am considering renting can handle tires spaced a maximum of 75" from outside edge to outside edge. The tires look set in, so it may be safe to assume that if the body is 77.601" then the tires are probably no more than 75" apart. I just don't want to take a 5 hour car trip towing a 2,000lb trailer just to find out it won't fit!

I Would Not Be Worried About The Tires Fitting On The Trailer I Would Be Thinking About The Rocker Pannels Fitting Between The Trailers Fenders Any Time I Have Hauled A Hudson Step/down On A Trailer That Was Always The Sticking Point0

Poncho,
Make sure that when the car is loaded, it will not bounce on it's suspension and bang up the rocker panels. I have seen peple use 2x6s under the tires as spacers to prevent the rockers from being destroyed. The tread will fit the trailer, but body damage can still occur...Just something to think about.

Also remember when loading:a stepdown is wider in the middle than at the ends, watch your door clearance on the trailer fenders. I've been there and done all that. Hudsonly Lou Cote0

If you're using a U-Haul Car Transporter, be very careful. I just brought my 51 Commodore home from Texas on one. Only an inch of clearance between fender and rocker panel. One of my tires went flat and the chrome rocker strip is badly damaged. Adding a 2 x 6 spacer under each wheel would be a good idea. Also, be prepared to drive slowly. 55 was max speed for me, above that the trailer started to oscillate wildly. Scary ride.

Sounds like I got lucky getting my 49 up here from Palm Springs.
The now-previous owner brought it up on his trailer for me for 500.00 - of course fuel costs were easily 1/2 of what it is now-a-days...man, I hate gettin' old...was that cracking sound my hip breaking?...oh wait...THAT WAS LESS THAN 2 FREAKIN' YEARS AGO
But I think I got a good deal and his trailer had either a really high bed or low fenders because there was plenty of room.
Time to go build the Alternative fueled Hudson!0 -
I was planning to use the uhaul trailer. has anyone tried the 2x6's and can confirm that it provides the clearance? now I'm concerned about using this trailer, but I've found it difficult to find another company to rent a trailer from other than uhaul. Ryder, Budget, and Penske either don't rent them or require them to be used with their moving trucks.0

Have you investigated the possibilty of hiring a flat bed wrecker to get the car. Rates should be in the neigherborhood of $1.00 per loaded mile. It would be more than renting a Uhaul, but with price of gas, wear and tear on your tow vehicle, for an extra $100.00 to $150.00 it may be worth it.
Also check with your car insurance company to make sure you do not need additional insurance.0 -
Why can't we answer the man's question? My 52 Hornet with 7.60 bias tires is 68 inches outside on the front. The rear of course, is 5 inches narrower.0

i think the answer is that the wrong question was asked. i looked at the u-haul specs in the past, they specify solely on the track width ignoring what else may interfear with the fenders. they do have two different trailers, an orange and an aluminum. they have different specs, the orange is definitely a tight fit on the rockers the aluminum may give more or less clearance. a trip to a u-haul hub may allow measuring each.
if its a done deal and you don't need to make the trip (i.e. to do a vehicle inspection or paperwork) you probably can't beat having someone bring it to you. i can vouch that 1.00 a loaded mile is achievable in todays market as i had a car delivered at less than that earlier in the year and a friend had one delivered last month.0
