I need a dimmer switch for 49, twice when I have used it it has cut off everything for a few seconds. I ended up in a field one night but did not damage the car, but do not want to take that ride again. Who would have and anyone have a part number. thanks in advaNCE. Jerry Miller

Go to Advance Auto Parts, NAPA. Auto Zone Etc. They are readily available.

There were two different wire end configurations back then but interchangeble by changing ends. Also wires are in different locations on Dimmer switch. Hudson shop manual shows differences.

Be sure it is the dimmer switch and not bad wiring etc. that is causing the circuit breaker to "blow" and then reset it self

    Good Luck! Jim Spencer

Advance part # DS10U. NAPA Echlin # DS101. Zone, Wells # UDS411 $13.00 to 16.00. Sometimes you have to 'lead' the parts guy, they ain't always familar with older stuff and it may not be in the computer system, meaning it has to be done the old-fashioned way. LOOK it up in a catalogue. (I work for Advance)

There is alot available out there if you can get the right help at the parts stores
  • Lift the hood and check the hood release cable. I had the steel cable touching the screw post connection for the headlights , causing the breaker to trip . My headlights would flash on and off. Relocated the cable and the problem was solved.
  • Boozer, I also had trouble with the hood release cable. My trouble was with the turn signal flasher. The cable was rubbing the wire to the right turn signal and was shorting the flasher when I turned the right signal on and of course it burnt the flasher out. Moved the cable and also put a few wraps of electrical tape in the spot where it was rubbing.

What you need is a 'brighter switch', not a dimmer one.

Jerry. Get you a head light relay and intall it. I believe there is one on Skips Pacemaker.
  • Thanks everyone, I got one. Also thanks for the tip on getting parts from another members car. They may object however. ;) Jerry
