News from Hudsonator!! Dana 44 upgrade
Tristansdaz, or other HET Forum readers
I have been operating on a borrowed computer since my little lightning strike episode in early June.
The insurance wheels doth turn slowly.
I haven't been able to post on the HET forum, but I have some information that needs to get over there ASAP.
The Dana 44 rear axle upgrade for the Hudson rear end is a GO!!
Just got a message from Phillip Harris of Fairborn Studebaker regarding the project status.
These are large diameter, custom Moser axles, the large type rear bearings, capable of being splined for the original 19 spline carriers - or the later 30 spline Dana 44 type carriers.
This is the message I recieved, the price will be the same as the Stude retrofits.
Quote:
Everything is a go. We will be taking orders, as soon as we double check everything. $525, will include new inner and outer seals and new bearings, may need to work something out on the outer seal retainers such as an exchange. You will need to make the hole in your backing plate large enough to go over the bearing or we can do that for you for $15 a pair.
End Quote:
I should have my new computer setup by next week - and I'll be back into the Hudson discussions.
Hud
I'm sure y'all been wondering where he was, posting on another forum as his work computer couldn't post to this one. This should be good news for a lot of you guys.:D

I've got the dreadful original rear end with the 4.59 gear ratio. Not knowing much about the Hudson rear end, I would really like to go with taller gears and limited slip. Can this be done with my rear end or is this option you are presenting the way to go?0

Until he gets back online, you can send him a PM (Hudsonator) or contact via the Ol Skool Rodz forum.:cool:0 -

What -aren't you on the plane yet?
Maybe someone broke into your house and is using your forum account while you're gone?0 -
Fairborn does not have a rear disc brake kit, but Steeltech does and it fits all Dana 44s:

I'm sitting here in Auckland watching the harbor lights waiting for the sunrise! (we're 5 hours ahead in Arizona and haven't got our times switched yet!)
I've got satellite broadband here and I couldn't let you guys have too much time off without hearing from me! lol Having a great time and have spent some time with Mike (a club member-essex coupe) and his family (they are great folks). Had a bit of delay getting here (due to fog) but have settled in and look forward to a great vacation.
Gotta eat breakfast now.........

I wonder if using the disk brake conversion would make any change (if so, how much) to the WMS to WMS distance so crucial to step down rear end widths. anyone know?

On Studebakers is does not matter, however you need to use 6" (not the 5.5" that is stock) or wider wheels, but with Hudsons I doubt that is a problem.0

Geoff.
Sorry Geoff, not enough time this trip. We head up to Doubtless Bay in a couple days, then Australia to visit ol' high school friends. Next trip we'll get down your way.

* * REAR DISC BRAKE CONVERSION
I just purchased a set of the SteelTech conversion brackets from Dan;
next steps are to gather the calipers & pins (ebay; already rebuilt & on the way), pads, rotors, flex lines and fittings (locally, car parts stores)
* * TAPERED AXLES to FLANGED AXLES (19 spline)
from fairbornstudebaker.com for $ 525 + shpg
* * REPLACE ORIGINAL Dana 44 "OPEN" AXLE & SPIDER GEARS w/POSI (Lock-Rite by PowerTrax, 19 spline)
from fairbornstudebaker.com for $ 369 + shpg
Here is the Powertrax No-Slip Differential INSTALLATION GUIDE

PS: trying to get this ole heap ready to drag race in July - not sure what year thought! hehe
engine and tranny are rebuilt internally and are being reassembled with some nice detailing - glossy-silver accessories on a black engine/tranny)0 -
Here is another great reference if you are keeping the D-44, using SteelTech Solutions rear disc conversion brackets and the Caddy/Riv/Toronado/Trofeo rear calipers and keeping your Hudson/Ford/Chrysler wheel bolt pattern:

So does anyone want to build me one of these rear ends? How much $$ would you charge me??0
