I am not sure what the problems have been in the past... many of the resturants opened in the 90s went belly up. Either cost or that one theme got to them. I know I liked to go and did often when there was a Grill in Hesperia California. Went down the hill to two others occassionally.. I think most are now closed. Even the couple that were in DFW area shuttered after lack luster action in the mid 90s. I checked the site ... appears there are 2 X as many locations as in the past... doing a lot better in the North too.

As far as memorablilia goes most is reporductins of the original items. THe Hudson Grill throuhg the wall was another story in the original francised stores. Original Hudson's Grill francise locations used a through the wall front end from actual Hudson cars. I believe Bill Allbright provided the original items. After the theme was set the through the wall Grills were cast from composite or fiberglass with some of the bright work still coming from OEM stock. The final versions I saw were all a cast product with ornaments made of similar materials.



The attached pictures are of one of the original Through the wall "Hudson Grill" It was For Sale on eBay some time ago.

That grill is from a '53, whereas the car in the restaurant logo has the upside-down 'V' and therefore represents either a '51 or a '52.



It's very suprising that the Hudson name is attached to a restaurant (never mind a chain of them), given the low name recognition for Hudsons (except for the Cars movie). I wonder how much, if anything, the restaurant chain has to pay to Daimler-Chrysler in licensing fees for use of the trademark.

The Home Chapter of the HET just held a meet at Hudson's Grill in Jackson, MI.



We had 15 Hudson products and 51 people in attendance. Cars & people people traveled from both sides of the state. We were able to block off parking right next to the restaurant and we had a separate room inside the restaurant for lunch. Plus the weather was perfect, sunshine with temps in the 70's.



If you have a Hudson's Grill in your state, it is a nice place for an afternoon meet.

The wall mounted frontend with working lights would be a great piece to have in ones house. I've seen the trunks cut from cars and sofa's made out of them. The tailights work by plugging into the wall. There are reproduction couches made of 57 Chevys and others. I'd love to have one made out of a stepdown. New business venture anyone?

Yep there is one in WI. and it's still there. It has a whole stepdown that was a rolling shell provided by member Ole Arenson and it is mounted behind glass above the entrance and the headlight light up faceing the highway I think.

Forget the couches made from trunks....buy a Hudson franchise and spare some parts. haha

There are at least two in Wisconsin. The first one built here is in Wausau, which has Ole Arneson's old Hornet above the door. They recently built the restaurant in Oshkosh, but I haven't been to that one yet. Seems like there might be a third one around here, too....not sure.

A Hudson Grill just opened here in the "north of Atlanta" suburbs, but it's got nothing to do with the cars. It's just a good but fairly common kind of sports bar. According to the article in the Atlanta paper that announced its opening, the restaurant name comes from New York's Hudson River. Of course that's a connection according to a 1948 Bob Hope joke: "Why do they call it the Hudson River? 'cause you have to step down to get into it!"

I ate at the Oshkosh, Wis. one (about a 30-40 minute drive from my house) on 7/22 at about 1:30 pm and there were plenty of people in there yet (of course a lot of this could've been from the EAA; people have been spending the whole last week getting up here for it). I think Hudson's will succeed here; nostalgia places in general tend to do very well here in Wisconsin.

Not all the franchises have front ends of cars; the Oshkosh one doesn't. However, there are plenty of enlarged Step-Down ads adorning the walls and what appears to be an authentic Hudson neon dealer sign above the entranceway on the inside (the red kite with the wings and white "HUDSON"). My only complaint is that there was almost no Hudson racing memorabilia/photos except for what was mentioned in the repro ads.

I chatted up the waitress and got to asking her about the "Cars" movie; she said that her boss was so excited about the movie that he bought tickets for the entire staff to go see it! They all went with their "Hudson's Grill" shirts on and had a blast; they all loved it! So much for 18-22-year-old girls not liking old cars...

Went to the web site and tried ordering a few t-shirts web site not responding:( None of these around here. Get a few of these and wear them when i get my 49 done be the envy of the town
