Help requested: Hudson 8 Valves

After getting it unstuck, I recently started my 47 Commodore 8 after it sat for about 6 yrs. It ran very rough and popped through the carb a time or two. I suspect the valves are stuck. I need some advise on how to best unstick the valves. I've had this car for around 30 yrs stored at my dad's and am finally getting some time to work on it. It has 54K miles on it. I'm retiring from the Army this month. Thanks.

Unfortunately, one of the features of those old splashers is that the valves hang up if they're allowed to sit too long. When I got my Terraplane I had to remove the head and hammer the valves down just to get them to move.

Only thing I can think of is, pull the head and remove the valve covers. Shoot penetrating oil into guides from below, then crank the car so valves are driven up. Then drip oil down the valve stems from above (so oil gets into the guides) and drive valves down with hammer (with wood or some sort of cushion between hammer and valve). Repeat, again and again!

I'm no professional. Hopefully someone will come along with a much better method. Good luck!

if it were mine i woukd get some krol and soak down every cyl. through the spark plug hole after a few days of soaking i would check with your finger over each spark plug hole while cranking to see what cyl. the valve is sticking in you can see thevalves through the spark plug hole when i had my 40 8 cyl. i got 2 valves unstuck with a screwdriverr i bent to hit the top of each stuck valve it down if this don't work i would pull the head as Jon said good luck
  • Thanks, both good advise. I hope I havn't harmed it by starting it with stuck valves! I"ll be working on it again in Sep. Will let you know how it goes. Thanks again.

:)Update: Found stuck valves in cylinders 2 and 3. Got them free by tapping down through spark plug hole, idles smooth. Ready to go to check over and road test. Thanks again.
