Auto-Lite Generator & Regulator
To make a long story short, a friend was doing some work on his 53 and discovered that the metal tags on these componets were held on by one rivet. When he moved the tag on the generator, he discovered that the number on the tag was different than the model stamped in the housing. So, I was hoping that someone with a 53 Hornet can do a favor and provide the model and serial number from the tags on their (year appropriate) generator and regulator? Trying to figure out what happended.
Thanks,
Dave

While we're on the subject of generators, if anyone out there has an Auto Lite GAB-4008, which was OEM for '29H, I am interested.

Best Regards,
James, you can use any generator from an Essex Four, (1919-1923), and Hudson super Six, 1924-1929. They are all the same size. And it is not a big job to fit a later model generator on the left hand side, driven off the fan belt. The advantage is that you can get at it easier for servicing, and you can use a two-brush generatro and voltage regulator.
Likewise for the later models, '47-'54 any generator will fit any model, you just have to match it with the correct regulator. Some are heavier duty than others - for instance the Hudson Jet generator is rated at 45 amps, whereas the '50 models were only 35 amps. The numbers will not be correct of course if you are fitting a different generator, so it depends on how much of a stickler you are for originality. Jet generators use a narrow pulley, but this is interchangeable with the wide ones. I have just put a Jet generator on my '53 Hornet, as the Hornet one messed itself in a big way. (My fault for not checking it - the brushes had worn down so far that the wire connection for the brush wore a groove in the commutator). What's the old proverb about a stitch in time?

I'm also looking for a three brush generator for my 36 Terraplane, book calls for an Auto-lite Gar 4701-6, and a TC-4304A cut out.

Alex,
I appeciate the detailed info. Do you know anything about serial numbers for these generators and regulators? We're trying to solve a mystery here.
Thanks,

Thanks.
I have a '36 Terraplane generator here, minus the pulley and cut-out. However, it would probably not be worth the cost of shipping it from New Zealand, with the the exponential increase in postage rates locally. I have tested it, and it works, so let me know if your are really desperate.

I don't recall coming across serial numbers, Dave - only numbers I've come up with are the numbers I posted.
