Why I Drive A Hudson?

My wife and I just came back from the Connecticut AMO car show in Meridan, CT. This year they invited Hudson owners to come and share their cars at the meet.

I brought my 49 Brougham and it got a lot of attention as usual. One of the guys asked me why I chose to own a Hudson? I explained to him that I grew up in the back seat of a 48 Hudson and that my Grandfather also owned a 29 Hudson. I also told him that Hudson people are the greatest. I explained that after 30 years in the club I have made friends all around the country. I told him about all the help I have gotten from other Hudson people in the restoration of my car.

My wife and I headed home at about 3:45 PM. The car was running great the engine just went dead. We managed to pull over to the side of I-91 and called the State police and Triple A for a tow. After about 20 minutes we looked up the highway and 2 pick ups pulling car trailers stopping. It was Ed Moore and Ed Moriarty from MA and another gentleman driving an AMC. They immediately said "lets see what's wrong". After checking for gas and then spark, they determined it was a spark problem. Removing the distributor cap they saw that one of my points had broken."My distributor has two sets". They disconnected the broken set and the car started up and I was able to drive home.

This is what makes owning a Hudson the greatest, the people.

    Ed,

That is a great story.. I know how you feel when your engine just goes dead. You get a knot in your stomach. However that doesn't surprise me about hudson people , they are the greatest. I live in Wilton Ct.and hope to meet up with you and your wife sometime in the future... THanks again for sharing.

I also own a Hudson mostly because I grew up in and around them. I always liked the relaxed style of the Hudson events, and the fact that they were "Meets" not "Shows".

It is great to see a group of people with common intertests helping each other out. I have seen this same spirit in the VW enthusiast community also, but I think it is fairly unique. A stranded brand X would probably sit along side the road much longer in the same scenerio.

Last year I was heading home from work when I passed a couple of guys stranded on the side of the road in a late 70's MG. I stopped (in my VW Jetta) to see of I could help. There was a british sports car event and these guys had just left when the car stalled and left them on the side of the road. While I helped them troubleshoot the ignition, no less that 15 MGs and Triumphs passed by, with only one stopping to help. I ran up to the auto parts store and picked up a new coil to get them going. We swapped it out and they were on their way. I was blown away that even members of their own club didn't stop to help.

I think I'll stick with Hudsons,

  • With the electricals on those older MG's they were probably scared to stop. :D When my Dad would get one of those in the shop if it was having constant electrical problems he would rip out the complete wiring harness make a new one and reinstall. 100% of the time they never had another electrical problem.
