One of the reasons that ebay shipping fees have gone nuts (a lot of them don't make any sense, really low purchase and very high shipping, here is an example: http://cgi.ebay.com/22-RC-REMOTE-CONTROL-RACHING-BOAT-TWIN-380-MOTORS-B18_W0QQitemZ290022034594QQihZ019QQcategoryZ11745QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem) is that ebay gets a cut of the selling price not the shipping cost. I can't complain too much about give ebay their cut, but some of the larger sellers that have stores feel they are getting screwed by the ever increasing commissions.0

$160 for a radiator!!!! Ok, that's Oregon to Maine - but I didn't PAY that much for a replacement radiator for the '86 Monte Carlo I had. And that was shipped over here from Pennsylvania!!!! Total cost for the Monte radiator, including shipping was around $80.

Shipping rate is far too steep for my tastes.
48-52 service manual, $559.72 WOW!
Anybody want me to ship one of my trans manuals? I'll give em the manual, just pay shipping.......HAHAHAHAHAH:rolleyes:0 -
I was high bidder on electric wiper motor for a late model Studebaker. Sell price of 19.99 ,ship cost of 20.00. I've never challenged ship before,so my question to him was how do you know how what ship cost is gonna be at 11PM Sat. night. His response was that he guesstimates and refunds difference between guesstimate and actual cost. Fat chance of that happening. I wrote back that I was buying as a spare and didn't have to have it, let me know on Monday. I also told him it looked as though he was trying to widen his margin by hiking shipping. He emailed Monday with a 13.00 ship cost and I completed sale. I know it isn't much money, but it's the principal , just sorta wizzed me off, and figured I wasn't gonna let him get away with it. My 20 cents worth.
thanks for letting share,

Nothing I hate more than high shipping cost, when they are not a reflection of reality. I sell on the Bay, and often, I pick up the tab for shipping and insurance, or even understate shipping, just to make sure I don't profit on shipping.
This previous case, I thought maybe there was something wrong with my computer, wow, just breathed a sigh of relief.... :eek:0 -
UPS rates are astronomical for large, heavy items. I recently shipped an antique vibraharp to someone in WI via UPS. It was $156 for a 65 pound box:eek: But the guy was thrilled just to get the instrument ... I was thrilled to sell it, it went for 3 times what I thought it would go for.0

We sell things on eBay and we package and weigh the item before listing it. We send everything USPS (unless we're asked to ship UPS, which is never) and calculate the postage using the USPS on-line calculator. You can get shipping costs to the penny for any destination in the world. http://postcalc.usps.gov/
We charge $2.00 handling in addition to the actual shipping cost. Book rate for a typical Hudson Manual is about $4.50. We would charge $6.50, shipping & handling. We list the shipping & handling cost in our auction. (The calculator asks for Zip codes, so we put in Alex Burr's. Nothing costs more than mailing from California to Maine.)
IN ADDITION, USPS has new "flat rate" boxes (I think there's 3 different sizes...maybe more). You can put ANY item, ANY WEIGHT as long as it fits in the box. Flat rate is $8.25. And get this...it's PRIORITY MAIL!! I just shipped a customer an item that weighed 17 pounds for $10.25 and he got it the NEXT DAY. He bought it Sunday, paid Sunday night by PayPal, and received it Tuesday before lunch.
Because the Post Office offers Book Rate or Media Mail, books are especially cheap to ship.
I would avoid people who are trying to game eBay and make money on shipping. Deal with those of us who are honest, give the real costs up front & stand behind our auctions.
Opps! I hurt my ankle jumping down off my soap box.0 -
After being burnt twice on shipping once I bought an NOS Hudson speedometer still in original box. Got it cheap as no one bid. Guy charged me $60 to ship it when it came a month later had $3.75 shipping on it.
Next time guy had listing for set of spring compressors listed flat rate shipping as anywhere in 48 for $5 I win the item he wants to charge me $180 to send it to Canada I told him I want you to ship it not drive to my door. He wouldn't budge so I had him send to my buddy in Idaho he sent it to me for $3 so I got away with $8 instead of $180.
Now I always ask first if I think their full of beans I don't bid. Doesn't happen very often though had good dealings on ebay.0 -
Ebay should bear responsibility for people getting cheated on shipping. After all, aren't they providing a venue for fraud and condoning it by their lack of action to prevent it. It has been my experience that if you're an ebay seller, you can do no wrong. If you're a buyer (the one who pays the seller who, in turn, pays ebay), your rights are few, if any. The best way to resolve a problem with a crooked ebay seller is to file a complaint with the States Attorney's Office in their state. Mail and Internet fraud are illegal matters which they persue. I speak from my first experience with ebay. I won an auction for some nice used hubcaps. When they arrived, the box was perfect but the hub caps were smashed. The seller lied and left loads of nasty feedback which, after six years, ebay won't remove, even after they were sent copies of the seller being disciplined by UPS and the States Attorney's Office. Not only did it it take a year for ebay to settle this fiasco, their crappy insurance company only paid half of what I was cheated out of. Now if I have a problem with an ebay seller that logic can't resolve, I leave no negative feedback nor do I contact ebay. I contact the States Attorney's offices and let them resolve it. To date, they have a 100% positive track record. Now, let the sellers beware and behave!
As far as shipping of very large or heavy items is concerned, Greyhound Bus has been the most cost effective way to go.0 -
Dealing with Ebay, if something goes wrong, is like dealing with the IRS, maybe worse. Several years ago I bought 2 computer monitors on ebay. After two weeks of no sign of them I did get the sellers info via ebay's website (they actually do have a way to do this) I contacted the buyer by phone. I got one excuse after another, but finally they did arrive. Now the scam, neither monitor worked so I called the seller again and he said wow I checked them my self before they shipped, right. BUT he gladly said he would take them back and refund my money, OK. The next day sure enough UPS came and picked them up, but no refund arrived even after several calls. Then a claim notice was sent to me that the seller had filed an insurance claim for the full amount of new monitors with UPS! I filled out my paper work and said no way were they damaged in shipment. So the guy now had my money and was trying to scam UPS too! I contacted Paypal and they got back $9 of my $270!
Ok now ahead 6 weeks. I give the guy 2 negative feedbacks one for each monitor. A week later I am notified by ebay that my account was suspended (this was the real ebay) and very serious charges had been filed against me by an ebay user. I asked (by fax this is how it works when this happens, no email is allowed) who filed the compaint and what were the serious charges. This went on for a month. I had to fill out all kinds of forms provide information about my credit card charges, etc. Finally I got my account back, but never once was I able to talk to anyone, nor was I ever informed of the charges or who filed them (although I knew and I provided all the emails, UPS claim info etc.) The bottom line is giving someone a negative rating has its risks, and once you get screwed it is hard to get it fixed as has been noted by others in this thread.
Also the guys account was mysteriously closed a few days after mine account was reactivated.0 -
Dan,
Your bad experience is yet another example of why I leave ebay out of the loop (they're resolution center is a farse anyway) and go right to the States Attorney's Office. A few clicks on their Website and the complaint is filed. It may take a month or so but in the end, the matter is resolved and I'm made whole again. Life on ebay is a learning experience. Although most sellers are upstanding, some are outright felons who freely use ebay to perpetrate fraud.
Hudsonly,
